Hey Robert. You're wife sounds very forgetfull!.

We still have a gas kettle, with a wistle, it comes in handy. we have had a power cut, and when the electric kettle decides to stop working, it comes in handy. takes ages to boil though. i guess it just makes you want a cup of tea even more :)

we still (my mum) has a chip pan with lard still, i nag her to get a deep fat fryer, she likes standing there for 15 mins till the chips cook i guess , she does need to get modernised, but she still wont get a deep fat fryer.

Ive seen the acti fries, they are still £100 and look like baked chips, might as well make your own cook them in the oven, or just buy oven chips. our chips in lard are kinda floopy, might be my mums cooking though :rotfl:, i dont think they taste that nice actually, maybe its just me though. will have to get oven chips one day soon, maybe i can convert her to get modernised :D

Lard does have a bad press, but its good for pastry :) asda sells it, people must still buy it. I think oil is best though, just because its suppose to be healthier :)

frying pans with oil or lard is dangerous, i dont think i'd be able to cook like my mum does, i'd just panic :o.
    :)

I thought that beef fat was the best thing for frying chips in, not lard,

"Lard is the rendered fat of a pig" http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-lard.htm

I had a deep frat fryer, and a waistline to prove it

4 stones lighter & now it is very occasional oven chips
    Numerus non sum
