Fixed penalty notice - any point disputing it

My son is learning to drive in my car so there are L plates up. Unfortunately I forgot about them and although I was not breaking the speeding limit for the road I was on, because I was displaying L plates I have recived a fixed penalty notice ( because I exceeded the 45mph limit while displaying L plates). Is there any point disputing it or do I just pay up?

dispute it as ur not a learner u have your full license and where doing the correct speed limit on the road.
U might have had the plates up but your license doesnt restrict u to 45mph how do u think driving instructors get about so fast lol

The law states that the car is restricted to 45mph when l or r plates are up no matter what type of licence the driver has so you have no recourse

Be carefull how you appraoch it, I would appeal the decision on the grounds that you didn't know to take the plates down. Don't try to get into the rights or wrongs of their decision, its much better to say sorry and beg a little. They're more likely to cancel the fine that way. I appealed on a parking fine I got in Newry and got a letter back saying the fine is cancelled along with a warning to pay heed to where I'm parking next time.

Francophile there are hundreds that break this law every day and get away with it, you have been unlucky.
I agree with Pretani's line, act dumb and say sorry.

peterdoherty is right and cooki2222 is wrong. The L plate is on the car, and even Lewis Hamilton with an L plate up is restricted to 45mph.
You haven't a leg to stand on with the argument that 'you' are allowed to do over 45, because it is quite plain that the car is restricted. It's surprising how many driving instructors drive around over 45mph with permenant L plates up.
Pretani's solution might get you somewhere, but you must acknowledge that you were in the wrong...
  • Always worth a try, as we are 'moneysavers', but realistically, if they stick to the letter of the law, you've no chance. Good luck anyway - if you don't ask.................

I'm not hopeful because I know I haven't a leg to stand on but will admit I'm in the wrong and beg for mercy. No harm in trying.
