Cancelled sup. card - still have to pay?
Kylie

I called Amex to cancel the sup. card. I was confirmed this was done and could not be used from that moment on.
Now notice it has been used and Amex "have no record" of me cancelling the card and say I am fully liable for the charges made on it.
What can I do?
(I have asked them to bring up the recorded conversation - but in the past they have just said that this particular conversation was not recorded...)

Charges made after I cancelled card come to over £400 in 4 days0

Who has been using it?0

Someone who didn't know I had cancelled it.
But if I was promised by Amex that it could no longer be used, surely I would be right to believe them?0 -

The card can no logner be used by YOU.
However if you have previously given authority (including continuous authority like annual insurance) then you are still liable for these charges.
Every time I cancel a card (and I cancelled AMEX recently), I have to sit rthrough a long speil about how I should cancel any continous card authorities I've set up like insurance or magazine subscriptions.
Cancelling the card does NOT stop authorities you have ALREADY given and having cancelled 3 cards recently and had a long speil on all of them, I would be very suprised if they didn't read the same "script" to you.
Are you sure you were listening to what they said and understood the significance?
They always read this as a script, so I'm pretty sure they did tell you.
You may not have appreciated the significant of what you are being told, but onyly specific people can cancel cards and they have a very specific script to read out to you.0 -
Should you not have told them not to use it?
Get the money back from the user.0 -
I am the main card holder, I was not cancelling my card.
I cancelled the supplementary card.
That supplementary card was then used to make several purchases.
I was told while on the phone that it had then been cancelled and could not be used from that moment on. They now tell me they have no record of cancelling the supplementary card.0 -
I think amex are in the right, if you didnt tell the other person to stop using the card.smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

Looks like its your word against theirs.
Think in the end you will need to pursue the person who spent the money, or pay it yourself.0 -
I have no issue with paying the charges, I am just annoyed that they CONFIRMED the card was cancelled and could not be used from that moment on.
I think that AMEX should be responsible for it, just as I would be had I not cancelled it.0
