I have been using ebay as a DVD rental company. Buy the DVD off ebay, watch it a couple of times and then sell it back again. It usually sells for almost as much as you bought it for it not the same. Then if you get one you really like you can keep it. The same goes for CDs and books.

I used to do this a lot on the dvd forums. Buy the latest R1 releases new and sell on usually losing no more than £2 after postage. But the second hand market has changed a lot over the last couple of years now that region 2 has pretty much caught up with region 1 in terms of what's available and when.

To keep on topic - back to Blockbusters - I did have a damaged disc sent through once but they replaced it quickly and extended my rental period to take it into consideration.

One thing to consider is to make sure you watch the films reasonably quickly and send them back otherwise it can become expensive on a per rental basis.

Lovefilm - ok - during free trial period and just beyond no problems titles at top of list dispatched but i found as time went on I wasn't getting anything in my top 10 - 15 choices. Subscribed for 8 months. They make you call a call centre to cancel your subscription which i find very annoying

Screenselect Again ok great during free trial and just beyond but then preferred titles & slow turnaround put me off. Also a couple of mistakes, wrong discs sent and had to chase to get them sent. Subscribed for 5 months. Cancellation easy.

Tesco (Video Island) - With them currently no problems so far been with them 6 months still getting my top choices, although I do rent older/children’s titles quite often and get my points added reg no probs.

Blockbuster - done free trial through Quidco - service during trial fine cancellation was easy - friend has done paid service and felt that top choices not being sent after a while.

MyMovieStream - done free trial through Quidco only 4 rentals in two weeks but arrived promptly and cancellation was easy.

I am currently doing a 30 day free unlimited trial with Sainsbury's (lovefilms) and so far have been so impressed. All the films they have sent have been my top films- and a very quick turn around. I cannot comment on beyond this (or how easy to cancel etc).

I have previously tried Tesco's and ScreenSelect (although it was a while ago) and didn't seem to get any of my top choices. I thought the service was good at Tesco though (a disk i posted back got lost and they were great at sorting it out and it wasn't a problem). It was also no problem cancelling.

From my personally experience so far, if i was to pick one it would definetly be Sainsbury's (i think cost wise Tesco's and Sainsbury's are equal!) Why not try a couple and see which you prefer.

I have tried lovefilm, screen select and tesco ( I know they are the same company but the service was shockingly different, tesco really are sh**e, cancelled in the end as was taking so long on turn around and they never recieved the last film back )
    lovefilm were ok, no problems.

I cant reccommend amazon enough though, been on their month free trial and the turn around is the fastest, and what I like the most is you have a bit more control over what you see next, we were adding films to bump up the number in the queue with the others and although we didnt mind seeing them there were other films we would have wanted first.

Think it depends on what area you are in aswell as to who is quickest.

    Hi

    I don't think there are many I haven't tried :p

I would rate Blockbuster the best in terms of turnaround and getting top of the queue films. Lovefilm would be a close 2nd.

Screenselect & Tesco ok service (I've never had quite the same problems others mention) but their turnaround is slower.

A smaller one but a wee gem is mymoviestream.com - their trial is only 4 disks in 2 weeks though so not great compared to the others but their service is excellent and I've got films from them that were top of my list for weeks with Screenselect.

Definitely go through Quidco.com for all of these - I've had £15 for BB, £13 for Screenselect, £4 for Tesco and £3 for Mymoviestream - not to mention a free DVD from Tesco's too!! :T

One I would avoid with the largest barge pole possible is movieconnect - the most appalling service. At the end of the trial I posted a film back in good time and 4 working days later they still claimed not to have received it and promptly charged me a month's whack. When I contacted them I received the rudest email ever from their customer services dept.

I think this blockbuster code for a 2 month trial expired on 30th March unfortunately.

I've had no problems with Sainsburys and been using them for a longtime now. If I post a DVD back today I usually get one sent out following day for delivery Saturday or Monday latest.

To get 2 months free rental with them go to:

    https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/freegift and enter code SB94A

    Enjoy!
