Confused about landline & internet

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I've never had to set up my own landland stuff. I've just moved from my student house where we have virgin media to an aprtment which doesn't have access to this. I understand this means I have to get Internet through a BT line. As poor students we want something cheap but the best offers are all 18 month contracts and we will only need a 12. We don't plan on using the home phone so are only interested in getting the best internet deal. If this is the case would it work out cheaper to get a bundel package or sepeate providers? Also, what is the case if we have to re activaed our BT line - is it really £125??
Please help !!

  • Rachel, there is something called mobile broadband that requires neither a landline nor a WiFi hotspot. It is ideal for students and people who are staying somewhere short term. You get charged for usage not time spend online.

It can be a bit slow, and has had some bad reviews, but I am very happy with it. It is best not to commit to a contract, but try the Pay As You Go or Ready-to-Go options.

For example for £49.99 you can get a 3g 'dongle' with an allowance of 3gb paid for in advance. This will expire either when the 3 months are up, or when the allowance has been used up. I paid £118.24 for 24gb prepaid.

If you do not play games or watch films or download lots of music, then 1gb per month is an adequate allowance.

Yesterday's MSE newsletter has news about BT line re-activation and avoiding the £££ fee BUT for some commitment!

Also check o2's PAYG Mobile Broadband IF only to try it out the concept for a minimum cash outlay.

If you buy via the Quidco website
The PAYG mobile broadband dongle see
    http://www.quidco.com/o2/
then see £40 for mobile broadband and the note "In order to receive cashback for PAYG Mobile Broadband you must top up with £15 within the first two months to receive your cashback."
ie total cost for hardware & usage for (upto) 30 days =
    £29.xx for dongle
    + £15 usage
    - £40 cashback
    = £4.xx
which is a good deal to try it out, even if you THEN decide to get another ISP's dongle/service!

    MKD

    PS
Today 25/6 the Quidco offer has changed so I think it now works out a FREE
    £14.67 for dongle
    + £15 usage
-£29.67 cashback (PAYG, different now to contract!)
    = £0.00 net cost!
Only runs to 29/6 it says!
