Strange Thing with Natwest overdraft !

I applied last month for a Currentplus account with Natwest, and to be honest I was surprised to get it, as my credit is far from perfect !. I have 4 defaults from 2006 and 1 Arrangement to pay. I do however have a Aqua Card, Capital one card and a Vanquis Card with I have had for about a year and pay in full every month and I have never had a problem with them, infact since 2006 I have been perfect.
Anyway I got the Currentplus account and upgraded to the Gold account as I did use the benefits, but I only got a Solo card, which I admit I was a bit disappointed with as I though I would get a 'Proper' card !, any I have funded the account, used it and even written a few cheques from it, always remained in credit. Anyway yesterday I was playing about with the online banking and clicked on 'Overdraft' and entered an amount of £50, I got a message to say it would be applied within 48 hours, and this morning it was !, to say I was surprised was an understatement !.
So my question is how could I get an overdraft (A credit product) and I can't get a proper Debit Card with them ?, or should I write to them and request one ?, I don't mind putting a set amount in the account if that's what they want. I was just really surprised at getting the overdraft if my credit was so bad, although I do have a 3-in-1 card with Lloyds they would not give me a overdraft !.
Thanks.

might be worth giving it a go but natwest do give out overdrafts even if you are not eligible for their maestro card. you can apply in the branch for a maestro card. can't be done online, i am afraid.Kavanne

I have written to my Natwest branch and also forwarded 3 months bank statements from Lloyds, these show £7000 in my Premier Current account (Average between £3500 - £7000 left in the account each month), and also £82,184.92 in my Savings account from my Inheritance. I have also said I am more than happy to move some of the money to them if that would help.
Not had a reply yet, but what's my chances ?, all I want is a proper debit card, I don't even need the Cheque Card Function as I have £250 Cheque card with Lloyds and never use it.0 -

if the money was in a natwest account for 3+ months it might help but if it's elsewhere they won't careKavanne

Thanks for that, I sent it all of to the Manager on Wednesday 1st class but have not heard back yet, so not sure if that is good or bad, fingers crossed, since then quite a few transactions have gone through and the balance is fairly healthy, but nothing ventured nothing gained.0

i will put money on them not changing their decision, unless you are eligible for private banking, in which case you would be allocated a relationship manager who might be able to do something - but again that would be on the condition you had over 50k in savings/investments with Natwest.Kavanne

Actually I am not so sure, I was in a similar Position to the OP, I opened the Natwest Account really for the benefits and as a second account, and was a bit miffed to only get a Solo card !. I phoned up the Call Centre who suggested going into the branch and getting a Service Card form, so (Remember I had only had the account a few weeks at this point) I went into the branch and complained that my exisiting bankers (Lloyds), which I had a Premier account with had given me a 3in1 card with £250 CGC, so she went away, came back asked to see my Lloyds card and said 'No problem we can match that' and ordered me a new card.
So don't be put off, that said my situtation could be different as I also have 2 Savings Accounts with Natwest, although only a very small balance in them, and also a £50 OD which I have never used.0 -
I just went into the branch and asked for a service card as i couldnt use Solo everywhere I wanted to, they didnt ask for an explanation or anything, they ordered me a new service card on the spot!'Sometimes you just need to keep your mouth shut':j0

hmm, i hardly ever used the account and rarely put over £500 a month in there so I wonder why I was and considering his balances, he wasnt!!!!
Banks are funny anyway, lol'Sometimes you just need to keep your mouth shut':j0 -
The OP said they have bad credit. I would hazard a guess that this is affecting the decision. Of course I don't know YOUR situation but if you also have bad credit I'd say, all people's circumstances are different and they may be something in yours that makes you more credit worthy than the OP.Kavanne
