I went to Egypt for 3 weeks last year and in that time we covered Cairo, Aswan, Luxor and Sharm. Luxor and Sharm are vastly different and it depends what you want from your trip. Luxor has many of the ancient monuments and temples and is probably the best place to go if you want a sightseeing cultured holiday. However, it's extremely full on and really is best avoided if your looking for relaxation.

Sharm isn't cultural in the slightest but the beaches and watersports on offer here are amazing and the area is certainly more relaxing. I did a bit of scuba diving here and would really recommend it. We stayed at the Kanabesh which was a local offering right on the beach, overall I was very impressed. We were originally booked at the Tropicana Rosetta but ended up leaving because we found the hotel such a let down.

Also note that Luxor is considerably hotter than Sharm and can get unforgivable during the day. It made it up as high as 45*C when we were there and that was during April. If your not a heat fan I'd avoid Luxor and even if you do go be careful wandering around the temples.

Personally I'd go for a Sharm holiday and have a day trip to Luxor as it is worth the trip. You can pick up flights fairly cheaply.

Just ask if you want any info.
  • Went to Cairo, Luxor nile cruise to Aswan, and Hurghada in January over a 2 week period. Luxor and Aswan the hottest about 28 then, but was their winter. Internal flights were cheap (About £22 per ticket Cairo to Luxor but booked on net as Egypt country of origin no problem at airport with this as Eticket). There were no children on the cruise which was the best part for me, but the Hurghada hotel had lots, although it was luxurious and relaxing.
