Why would you need Windows development tools to disable a cd drive?

Wouldn't it just enable on re-boot?

Nope, only if you re-enable it :)

Maybe I'm thinking of what happens after uninstalling it from the Device Manager.

I've thanked everyone that posted coz it has been very helpful :D

I did disable it to begin with but the light to say it was trying to access one of the drives was still flashing even after a reboot.

So then my OH disconnected the drives physically and that has helped to noticeably improve the performance :D

I won't be getting replacement drives until my little monster is a bit older coz he's knackered 2 printers as well and nearly knackered a video player and a brand new washing machine too :rolleyes2:

We use a memory stick/pen thingy on the odd occasion we need to transfer info at the moment and haven't needed to use the DVD/CD drives since they got broken so obviously didn't use them that often ;)

You may also want to get an anti static wrist strap.

I say.... back to school! give us a "golden star" button!

And perhaps a "chocolate star" button, for when the advice isn't quite so golden! :rotfl:

If you find that you need one again, you could get an external one that just just plug into a port on the front or back of the PC when you need it, then lock it away when your done :)
