UPDATED TO SAY THANKS :-D How do I disable the CD & DVD drives on my computer???

My preschool-aged son wrecked these drives a while ago by constantly pulling the drawers out and putting crap in them so now they're completely unusable.
My computer is really slow and I wondered if these drives are affecting the performance, especially as a light is constantly flashing on one of them...
How do I make them unusable/unreadable from the computer itself so that it doesn't know they exist until I'm able to replace them ???
Any help/advice would be most gratefully received

You should never call somebody else a nerd or geek because everybody (even YOU !!!) is an
"anorak" about something whether it's trains, computers, football, shoes or celebs

Open the side and disconnect the power.

Go into control panel > system> hardware> device manager and disable the drive.0

The simplest and most reliable method by far is to physically disconnect them. All you need to do is open up the case and unplug both the data and power cables from each drive.

I'd go with the disconnection approach, there is a way to "properly" disable them, but you'd have to download some of the Windows development tools.
And even then I dont think it'll stop them opening/closing.
Power off, remove cover, disconnect the power connector and away you go.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Why would you need Windows development tools to disable a cd drive?0
