Can anyone help? My son has just come in and told me he has the chance to go abroad for 4 days leaving tomorrow morning (a crowd of his mates are going but 1 has dropped out this evening due to family problems). The flights and accommodation are paid for and I can give him a bit of spending money. Trouble is, he is claiming JSA and is due to sign on tomorrow afternoon! They are leaving 1st thing in the morning so he won't be able to go into the Jobcentre first to sort things out.
Any ideas anyone? One of his mates has told him to get me to ring and say he's ill in bed but I'm not sure I want to do that!

Seriously, and I hope this doesn't sound negative, but don't get involved with stuff your adult son should be taking care of!
He can make the call appropriate office to inform them of his change in circumstance and take responsibility for any consequences from his lack of planning.
There isn't any need for you to be having this ethical dilemma and shame on his friend suggesting this to you and shame on your son if he has knowledge of this tactic and expects your consent.0 -
Here's a novel idea how about the truth
Thanks but I think you may have misunderstood! I probably didn't make it too clear but I was in a rush to get the post on. Anyway, basically what I need to know is if I can sort things out on the phone with the Jobcentre or does it have to be my son, which as I mentioned, will be difficult as he's going at 5am. Plus, I thought if you were going on holiday you had to fill some form in before you went, but I may be wrong.
Also, will it be possible to suspend his claim for 4 days or will it be closed then started again when he back which seems a lot of hassle just for 4 days.
Thanks.0 -

I can't answer those specific questions but I remain worried that the activities have inadvertantly fallen onto you. Hopefully there will be a poster on soon that can report on the steps necessary to sort out a missed signing on date and their holiday policy.0 -

Oh crikey this will teach me to make myself clear!!
Firstly, my son would normally sort things out himself but there are obvious time constraints. Plus, it wasn't a lack of planning as he was only offered this freebie tonight!
I'm not having an ethical dilemma as you put it, there was never any intention of claiming JSA for the 4 days he is going to be away. The suggestion by his friend was made merely because its too late for him to go into the Jobcentre to sort things out. Anyway, if he was ill in bed surely he wouldn't be eligible for JSA as he wouldn't be fit for work??0 -
you will get your head bitten off here if you dare ask such questions.
I would ring on my sons behalf if it were me (everyone deserves a holiday whether employed or not.)
failing that or if they wont accept your call, get him to call from spain or wherever hes going by using a payphone or prepaid card.
like i said, thats what I would do. the rest is up to you.
If you tell them he is abroad they can and probably will stop his claim and he will have to do a rapid reclaim when he returns to the uk.0 -

Thanks Baza52, first sensible reply I've received.
I'm going to try to speak to the Jobcentre myself in the morning just to explain the situation. I was hoping that they might just suspend his claim seeing as its only 4 days but after reading some old threads it would seem that in all probability they will close it and he'll have to do a rapid reclaim next week.
Anyway, I'm off now to make sure my adult son has packed his toothbrush!!!

If hes off to Ibiza he might even bump into my son.
hope he enjoys himself and if hes like my son im sure you will enjoy the break from him too0 -
If he was going on holiday in the UK, then he could continue to claim JSA.
If he goes abroad, they will stop his claim and he will have to restart it when he returns.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
