I think I'll have to print EVERYTHING out concerning the EU Directive and have it with me when an engineer calls ;)

    Please don't.

    a) We have the Sale of Goods Act.
    b) He's just an engineer. He gets a list of jobs to do, and doesn't make decisions on what to charge and who to charge.

I rang to book a call from an engineer from Comet. Initially being told that a supervisor would ring me back - hour later I called again.

After being put through to numerous people I have now booked an engineer to call sometime on Tuesday.

However...they are now saying that yes..the £30 call out fee WILL be refundable IF the fault is a MAJOR component....NOT a MINOR!

IF when the engineer checks the set and then calls his manager to explain the fault it is deemed 'Minor' - they say the call out fee is charged PLUS parts and labour!

IF its MAJOR...then £30 refundable and repairs free!

Any idea how or where I stand here please?

It all depends on whether said component should last longer and hasn't been damaged by misuse. Which, in a washing machine, is rather unlikely.

If you ask me, a major component is one which stops it working. A minor component is something like an LED display or button, which is no more than an annoyance if it breaks (in most cases). Either way, they've got a funnny way of going about things. If it shouldn't have broken down, then it's covered by the SOGA whether major or minor

Exactly....WHAT do they deem to be a Minor or Major component?

It is a tv which is just flashing up different colours - blue, green and red. From googling and my 'novice' knowledge..it seems to be some logic board that has gone wrong:confused:

I'm sorry, I got confused between threads there...for some reason I thought you had a washing machine!!

Maybe ascertain beforehand what they say is major and minor?

That doesn't sound dodgy at all :D

Anyway, if you can't watch it - that's a major problem.

    UPDATE!
Engineer called....MINOR fault ;o( He just used his remote control to re set the tv to factory settings (WHERE can I get my hands on one of these?? LOL!) Rung his manager and they said no charge apart from the call out fee of £30 which I'd already paid. He said it could have been caused by electric storm ((shrug)).

Hey guys, i don't know if this has been posted before, but i have found out that there is a secret EU law, that is largely unknown. It gives us consumers more than just the one year manufacturers warentee.

That's from The Times. I hope this helps some of you.

Good, I will use that when I need to change the oil on my car for a replacement Oil Filter!

    Hi MsBoop

Good news indeed. So I'm assuming all is now back to working order with your son's TV?
