  • Hi, just wanted to thank you for drawing my attention to this.
I am in much the same position as you, with around the same value in shares that I had planned to sit on for a year, but I don't want to pay an inactivity charge.
Unfortunately I have already accepted the TD Waterhouse offer, so will have to wait until the transfer is done and then look into changing it over, have you decided on where you will have your holdings?

    Hi,

Thanks for your suggestions, and particularly for letting me know that the Fool, etc are all backed by Halifax.

I'm leaning towards either Sharecrazy or the Fool, with a heavier emphasis towards the Fool. This is because I've seen them considered to be reputable, and their advice of good quality and reliability. Sharecrazy just sounds a little too flimsy for my liking, but then again one shouldn't judge a company by its name alone.

I'm not too share about this sharebuilding thing, as I'm relatively new to sharedealing. At the moment I'm really interested in transferring my existing holdings to a company that won't charge for leaving them there. They were bought before I moved to a telephone advisory service, but I'm reluctant to sell out due to drops in their value so might as well keep them. I'm not even considering regular share purchases due to a lack of knowledge and capital, so not sure if the sharebuilding one is right for me.

The fool, iii and Halifax shares are all operated by Halifax Share Dealing - all offer a £1.50 sharebuilder thing.

Which is okay, but iii refused me due to my credit rating. So I guess it would be the same for the others within the group.

Run that by me again they refused to take money off you because of your credit rating? Its not a credit account you can't trade unless you have money in the account, can you?

Strange world where a credit rating stops you spending, imagine going into tesco with cash and they say sorry can't serve you your credit rating is not up to scratch.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

I did laugh at the letter! They just told me I couldn't open one as I had failed the credit check and gave me details of a credit reference company I had never heard of so contact for my file.

HL were AOK with me and I have opened my new one with Hargreaves Lansdown with no issues from either; both did the online ID check and were happy for my pennies.

I think that Halifax are very anti debtors/bankrupts and ex ones/bad debts these days. My credit rating is shot to pieces but I owe very little these days. Nevermind, its their loss.
  • I too am in this predicament. I have been looking at "iii Portfolio Builder" as an alternative. My share holdings are not more than £500 in total and I do not plan on making too many more investments in the near future. Does anyone here use iii and can anyone advise on whether they would be right for me?

Do they have any regular payment requirements etc?
Are there any charges to move your HB shares into this type of account?

I've now set up with iii, just waiting for password in post but did confirm with them that a single trade is £10, but there are no annual or inactivity charges so that will suit me just fine. I had sold my taster shares with HB, made some profit and they dropped the next day, so hopefully will remain low for a couple more days until I can invest heavily.

All set up with the Fool and just in time too as I'm having to leave unexpectedly tomorrow. Very friendly staff and the whole process was a breeze. HB are handling the account transfer as well from their end.

You could also consider hargreaves lansdown as appear to have no inactivity charges. I have similar problem...

    Hi,

Can anyone do a quick outline of what I need to do to transfer from HB to sharecrazy for example?

Do I just open an account at sharecrazy and then inform HB that is who I would like to transfer to? Will this be free?

    Thanks
