Most ask for credit checks for finance? They must all ask or there'd be no way to know who you are.
Buy 2nd hand. Plenty on eBay, try local papers etc. You'll easy find an older machine on eBay which will do a great job.
Why do you want 2GB RAM? That's double what Vista needs. Can understand the 160GB HDD if you have that much data but that will severely restrict the 2nd hand market. Buy an external drive.0 -
Vista runs like a dog with 1GB of RAM, though.
A mobile broadband + laptop contract also needs a credit check - they aren't just going to hand you a laptop and hope you pay yer bills....Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -
You have large debts, You are trying to borrow even more money whilst on benefits, and you also want people on here to find you a laptop you can get on credit!! at which point will you stop?.0

riskdrive, it really sounds like you can't afford to buy a laptop and you're trying to put off paying for it. Paying monthly by taking out a loan, or by signing up to mobile broadband with a 'free' laptop, is expensive, and WILL involve a credit check. Doesn't mean they won't still sign you up though.
That '3' example above involes £960 for a laptop - I know you're not too technical, but I'm sure you know you can do a lot better than that.
If you really need a laptop (you could have a decent desktop computer for £50), then eBay, as above would be a good try. Budget £100-£150, and look for at least P4m, 1gb RAM, 40gb hard drive (unless you know you have more than this to store), and Windows XP. You'll pay far more for a 2GB RAM and 160gb hard drive laptop with Vista, and you need to think about whether you need, or can afford this.0 -

Perfectly fine if you upgrade to SP2 and set the machine to "Best Performance" in system settings. It removes all the [strike]flashy annoying crap[/strike] FX.
Also don't use any of the so called 'security' produts like Norton or McAfee. Use something a bit more lightweight in resources.
Vista has gotten quicker IME since SP2. Get SP2 here
Obviously, 1GB of RAM ain't gonna fly you to the moon but it's dirt cheap and the OP can pop their own RAM in for a few pounds. Setting out to buy a 2GB RAM machine means it'll be much higher spec = higher price. Go 2nd hand and add RAM if you need it.0
