I used to do it in a similar way when I was much younger but then stopped. Fortunately then I was well enough paid for it not to matter too much. Really I should have started again a lot sooner but it wouldn't have helped prevent BR - that was things beyond my control! It feels good to know exactly what I have to spend though I'm still at the envelope stage for alot of my spending - got a box with a series of envelopes labelled 'housekeeping', 'gas' and the like with allocations of money in them - even got little cards in them so I write down what I put in the envelope and what I take out!!!!!
I maybe going over the top but at least I feel in control. BR 08/06/09 ED 10/03/10BSC member 2500 -
I must admit I am a bit of a Co-op fan. They have always been courteous to me and its nice speaking to someone who isnt in a call centre a million miles away. However I am aware that the Co-op operate a 3 strikes and you are out policy, and with only Barclays left that are BR friendly, it does pay to draw up a spreadsheet. I knew payments under £100 ( thought it ws £80 ) can be transferred in 2 hrs, but I thought you could do this online rather than phoning ?
Still wish I had discovered them years ago, and when all said and done, hats off for them for allowing BRs accounts, however limited.0 -

I agree, they have always been exceedingly helpful. Even when I went into branch on the day of bankruptcy to discuss my accounts, the branch manager actually made himself available and took me into a private area so we could discuss it! At no point was I made to feel less important than a 'normal' customer. Over the phone they are always helpful and very pleasant. I'd give a thumbs up for the Co-op (if I could find the picture!).

I have 2 accounts one is for debit debits and standing orders other is spending direct debit one runs itself though i check payment have gone in and out on correct days i find it simple with spending i only pay by cash and not card so i know if i aint got the money i cant have the lolly.
i also use msn money program which is brillaint and i put everything down including bard of chocolate it is amazing where you see money going and can see where you can cut back on and save a little here and there.

just because co-op is BR friendly does not stop it from having faults,we all know in this day and age that all banks if they wished could have real time online banking, and the only reason that I can think of is that they get more money doing it the way they do,if it takes 2 or 3 days for money to leave your account then that is 2-3 days more the bank has it, so therefore can make mony on that, and also if that account gos O/D then that also makes the banks money, and they are two off the banks biggest money makers.
I take my own notes on my in and out goings its called a bank account and it should be a step up from paper or spead sheets but some banks dont want us to run an in credit accont all the time.0 -
Co-op does operate faster payments now although i believe it is for transfers less that £70 or £80 as i do it all the time now. I dont think it kicks in until you have sent the payment to the account 3 times though although thats what i noticed anyway. But i send money to my partners hsbc and pay money to my barclays and its instant. Also the bank you are sending money too has to also do fast payments which Abbey dont i believe as when i used to send money to my old Abbey account it went from my co-op straight away but took 3 days to arrive in the Abbey accont.
I cant understand that when i shop at asda or buy fuel on the card it takes 3 days to come off my balance though.:cheesy: K2nga :cheesy:

But surely you know you've made those transactions, can see they're not showing as being taken out of your account, and just deduct the amount from the available balance

D/D can be taken it seems at any time,I have 10 D/D on the go and it is hard to know when they will or have been taken, even when they have been taken my bank does not show which one and the name of it until the day after, and the money for the D/D has to be there the day before it is taken? there are ways around it like pen and paper to keep records but is it too much to ask to know the day a D/D will be taken, the name of it,if I use my debit card for say £40 the shop will ring the bank to check I have that amount, will it be so hard for the bank to show that amount as taken?
you dont use a calculator and check all the answers on an abacus! or maybe some do.0
