Hi All,
i didnt kow where else to put this. Please move it if its in the wrong place.
As the title says, i have bought a house and am due to move in this weekend,
I currently rent a flat.
I am in the process of calling all out sppliers (phone, electricity etc) to update them with my new address.
Whe speaking to BT and Sky i was told that to transfer my existing account to a new home, i need to pay a moving fee. i agreed to it and told them to take it out of my next bill (end of july for both). workman i booked for next week, both told me that have the right to cancel before the wrk is actually carreid out.
what i was thinking is, what if i cancel my accounts with them and have my wife sign up as a new customer? that way we will get a better deal/package and will get installation (atleast with sky) free.
is there any wrong in this? illegal maybe? has anyone else done this?

I cannot see how it is illegal. Have you signed up for a set period?0

cant answer your question but interesting because its given me a bit of thought.....new customers seem to get better deals dont they.....hope someone helps you out with your question...:hello:Time2start a new year diet for a new me:j0

cancel the subscription - when they ask why, tell them you are moving and are having to make a few cutbacks - they might come right back with a decent offer straight away. I cancelled my sky subscription ages ago and am still getting really good offers from them; free sky+ box plus free installation etc but I haven't got a TV anymore so not really worth it for me haha0

First of all, I would check terms and conditions and the contract. Is it the kind of pay as you go or is it set for a year?
Then it is not fixed for a year I will call them up and tell them to give you the same deal as a new customer because if they don't, you can just cancel the contract. I don't think they want to lose a customer.
Good luck.0 -
re BT - their website says that when moving home you will pay a standard connection charge of £122.50 only if there is no longer a dialling tone at your new place. If a tone is present then they will not charge you a connection fee - so what have they told you???
Seeing as it says exactly the same for a new customer, then becoming a new customer has little advantage if there is no dialling tone anyway.
Either as a transferrer or a new customer, the website clalry states that the connection charge is not always payable, so the fact they have given you a cost indicates they know something we don't

Thanks for the quick replies guys.
I have been in my current flat for over 3 years, so for all suppliers, i am no longer in the initial 12 months contracts anymore, so can cancel anytime i want.
00ec25, BT have quoted me the figure you found, £122.50. My new place is a brand new house (new build) so there is no tone at all.
So i guess, becoming a "new customer" with BT is not an option since i will have to pay it anyway.
jinglebell, i could threaten to cancel, but if they agree to me cancelling, i have no other alterntive. The only other phone provider i know of is virgin, but they have not laid their cables at the new home yet.
With sky, They are charging £60 for a guy to come and install the dish. If i want to upgrade to Sky+ at the same time, they will charge me £89 for both.
Hoever, as frugallass said, as a new customer i will get Sky+ and installation free.
Looks like i'll have to suck up the BT cost, but i'll be cancelling sky tonight!!!0 -
Best way, cancel your sky and your BT.
Call to get Sky installed at your new house and tell them you have no BT line. The Sky terms and cons (should be on website) advise that they will re-imburse £122.50 for a BT line installing.
I'd clairfy yourself but there is or def was a loophole for SKy to pay BT for the installation.I beep for Robins - Beep Beep

Few links about Sky paying for your BT, well indirectly (if required)

I'm moving to a new build. No idea what yours will be like, but in mine the phone line is not connected and the BT man needs to come and do something with a tube in the ground outside the house. Signed up for the 18-month contract someone mentioned above and got the £122 fee waived.
Sky I did exactly what you suggested. As a 12-year plus customer I simply canceled this house and called to book an install for my new house (in my name, with the same bank details - just the new address). Not only was installation cheaper than if I'd moved, I get a new box with warranty too. Only downside is the 12 month contract, but I'm happy with that.
Sky will take a couple of weeks at least to fit, BT you should have called weeks ago - it'll be a month or so before they can get to you to fit the line.0
