BT cancellation charges

Hi all,
Sorry if this has been covered many times before (I suspect it has) but I had a cursory glance and couldn't find anything.
I am leaving my rental early due to loss of job and going travelling/living with folks, hence I have to cancel my BT Broadband and Vision early....
Problem is, I have told them this and they don't appear to be sensitive to the fact that I can no longer, through no fault of my own, receive the service.
I am therefore being stung for several months charges (£54.20), a cancellation charge (£22.50) and a cost for not using my Vision box for the year (£70)
Am I really stuffed or can I get around this? It feels awfully harsh....is this really what this industry has come to, enforcing cancellation charges? One thing is for sure, if they force me to pay, I'll not be touching BT with a stick in the future....

Didn't 'sign' anything - I think one accepts the contract by joining up and agreeing to pay by DD.
I'm not suggesting I haven't stiffed myself by agreeing to an 18 month contract and the ending up out of work. I just seem to remember once or twice in the past, leaving Sky TV (as an e.g.) before the minimum term as we moved house to one that couldn't receive Sky and never getting hammered for cancellation charges. I'm surprised how aggressively BT are pushing this, but I guess it's in the face of plenty of competition nowadays. Ironically, as I said, I'll not touch BT again with a stick if they force me to pay up for something I legitimately can't have.0 -
It may seem harsh but its no different to any other contract with any other company. mobile /tv/etc...... agree when you sign up and thats it.0

you don't need to 'sign' anything - you probably ticked a box online or agreed to the terms and conditions over the phone.... it's your job to check these, and also frequently check these as they can change (if a significant change, you can leave - but in your case still would need to pay cancellation charge - but only within 30 days of the change).0
