I went through all the comparison websites as MSE have suggested and got an initial quote for the wife's car for £106.52 from the AA with £10 cashback through Greasypalm!
Rang them up and confirmed the quote but as we were winding up the nice chap on the end of the phone asked if I was interested in a quote for home insurance with no obligation and a £15.00 discount off the car insurance premium. OK, it took another 15 minutes but the £15.00 was taken off and I was very pleased even though my home insurance is not due until Nov.
May be worth asking if you need to renew soon!
Ear to ear grin!

maybe, i realise that but thats a hell of a difference, he's 53 with over 10 years no claim bonus (could be more) and drives a W reg clio0 -
I got mine fully comp for £146 with £75 cashback.
reeree - postcode can make a huge difference.
Any claims? convictions?
What's occupation?
mileage?
cover?
£250 doesn't sound too bad.
My car was nearly 20 years old and has now been scrapped.0 -

hi lisyloo, no claims no convictions, he works for a double glazing firm making the windows and travels between 80-100 miles a week, we live in quite a good area, although we do park our car outside the house as we have no garage, i suppose that makes a difference aswell, but £81 seems so cheap dont you think0 -

It was Sheilas wheels.
I don't think the cash back offfer is as good anymore (there still is one but it's less).
It's designed for women (don't know if they exclude men) but they are the same company as esure.
Yes £81 is cheap, but £250 is not bad.
Did you shop around and follow all the tips in Martins article?0 -
We have downsized the wifes car from an 06 VW Touran to a 97 R Fiat Cinquecento 900cc due to me being made redundant last month and the need to reign in costs, besides she only needs it for the school run and pottering around 5000 miles a year tops!
I have 8 years no claims and no points, however as it was pointed out it can be a bit of a postcode lottery when it comes to car insurance, we live in mid Wales, fairly rural but if you follow Martins advice by using all the comparison websites it is possible to really reduce your premium (worked for me).
I did ask our existing insurer and they quoted £155.00 (no contest really)0 -

can i ask who your existing insurer is, thanks, weve just had another quote for £2040 -
reeree....existing insurer is/was Churchill, never had any problems with them and very satisfied with their service, however given current circumstances costs are everything.
To be fair, they did admit that they couldn't even get close despite the
discount as well.
Renewal for the VW was £275. which is not bad at all but we are taking a long term view with things.
