Best thing to do, as mentioned above is look in local paper/yellow pages, and find someone who does MOT's without repairs. That way, they have no vested interest in 'finding' things that are not really wrong. Quite hard to make a specific recommendation as we don't know where you live!
  • I used them once and NEVER again! My car failed the MOT and the work was not carried out properly. Also they did not know how to reset the computer system on my car and told me I would have to go to a VW dealer to sort it out myself!

anyone got any good recommendations of where to go for an MOT??? not a dig just mine is up soon and wondering where is good that isnt going to rip me off"!

Try your local council testing station. They don't do repairs so have no vested interest in failing you but they do get checked very carefully.
Don't wait till the last minute to book, ours usually has a weeks waiting list.

I took mine to Mr Clutch in Derby and they do MOT's for £16 and mine passed:T(very nice people too). National tyres have a place next door and their MOT's are £20 (bleedin' rip off:rotfl:).
I seem to remember that Nationwide offer a price match on repairs. So if you do have to use them check with other local garages using like for like parts:beer:

I used a half price deal last year and my Bristol nationwide passed my car fine and even changed the bulb over the rear license plate for free so i'll give it another go if ithis offer is still on in july

We used this deal recently. They replaced windscreen wipers which were only replaced late last year, and adjusted headlights bringing total price to £66. Maybe there was something wrong but I bet if I gone to the mot test centre we used last year those faults may well not have been there.

See Martins http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-mot information which recommends the council test centres - wish I'd done that.

I've used both Nationwide and Kwik Fit for MOTs in the past, and had no problems. I've just had my Civic MOT'd by a Honda dealership, and they tried to get me to fit new brake pads - even though I'd replaced them less than a week earlier myself!

I took my car to an F1 autocentre just over a week ago for an MOT. My car is nearly 8 years old and has high mileage. It passed and it cost me £35. They did it in under an hour on a Saturday.
  • used a coupon out of the best mag halfprice at the nationwide centre ,found them very good booked in for 8.30 sat morning phoned me at 10 to collect the car ,passed only £27 to pay no problems on a 2001 corsa

I initially told people about this offer and as you can see from replies some people said don't use it. I had mine done last year and there was no problems so recommended it.

However this year was very different! We put our car in and within 2 hours it had not only failed on about £500 worth of work but things had been damaged. Not accusing them but in the space of 2 hours our perfectly good windscreen wipers had been ripped apart and our bulbs had been disconnected(it showed on our MOT as a faliure-bulb!) we had checked all the bulbs before going in and knew they were fine.
