Your best bets to pay the fee for repair

I don't have any experience in Playstations but you could try writing a letter to Sony.

I had an issue with my Panasonic camcorder which developed a fault and was about 6 months out of warranty. I wrote a letter explaining that I was a loyal Panasonic customer (blah blah!) and that I didn't think the camcorder was of a satisfactory quality given that it had broken 18 months after purchase. In the end, they paid for the repair which cost £160 without any hassle.

Might be worth a try if all else fails.

nah they wont

they have done a very long grace period

my friend put his on a meter high stack of magazines 2 years after buying and surprise surprise it collapsed and the lens cracked along with the case, and the hdd failed too

he called sony explained and they gave him a reconditioned one free of charge

but now theyve stopped that due to the low profit margins on it and have set charges that i feel are quite fair

op, pay the repair fee, after you have an engineers report you wont have spent much off the repair, and you may be able to push for a 3 month warranty on the actual repair if you ask nicely.
Back by no demand whatsoever.
• Latest Update:-
Sony will repair PS3 for £99
Retailer will only do something if I get an Independent Report, went to consumer direct who referrerd me to local Trading standars who don't know anyone in my area (Rochdale, Manchester) who do Independant reports.
Does anyone know were I can get an Independant Report done.
• Couldnt find an independant expert but the retailer who sold it me finally agreed to pay half the repair which is now done & sorted. So happy enough i suppose.

Honestly, that's not a bad solution. An independent report would likely have cost you over £50 and the chances of you getting that back were slim. The retailer had no obligation to fork out £50 like that, so I would suggest you graciously accept that you have received a decent outcome on this occasion. Do no harm to thank the retailer now that it has been repaired. Worth keeping in with them in case of future issues.

Its still covered by warranty.

A little known EU rules states that every electrical appliance bought in the EU carries a 2 year warranty.

Retailers are not always aware of this but it is in place.

I heard about the law in the saturday guardian's money section.

Hope it helps

And maybe you need to get your facts right before stating EU Directives.

Go and have another look.
• Despite me worrying they may think of me as a bit of a plonker I got a phone call back within the hour, even though it was the wrong department, and a new playstation 2 days later.

The address I used was steve.dowdle@eu.sony.com

Hi,

You're right, you did use the wrong e-mail address, this would have gone to Sony rather than Sony PlayStation. I got through to them pretty easily on 08705 99 88 77 but their e-mail is help@uk.playstation.com.

Take it easy!
