London; £139,950 for a whole half decent Vicky house in demi-grot but not that bad area. Commutable, road noise etc but you couldn't get a conversion in that area for that price 3 years ago.
Just going to look at Brighton now ...surely the lost inflated property prices in the whole of the UK?
I've always said London isn't that expensive compared to many other areas. And that link proves it.
You couldn't buy anything half that size at that price in the village I grew up in. A small 1-bed flat (cheapest property) is £145k.0 -
My anecdotal is this.... local newagents was sold and above it was refurbished as flats. Development dragged on, there was no parking at all. They were slow to sell. All four sold in August 2006 on the same date. Now all four are for sale again.

There's something fishy about the original prices. The recent listings with different descriptions and significantly different prices make it clear they are not identical flats, but they all "sold" at the same price originally, and on the same day. Now they are all for sale again. The Land Registry prices were obviously not true market prices, it was probably just the owner transferring them from one company to another, or into their private possession.0 -
In 1997 I did a temp job for a conveyancing solicitor. One small, mid-terrace cottage crossed my desk at an unbelievable £27,000 [1]. I'd just moved from an area where it would have fetched about 2.5x that and it made me stop and gawp at the price....
Also, not far from there, I was aware of 2-bed flats that were for sale sub-£30k [2], again, unbelievable prices.
At the time, my parents bought their 3-bed semi for £70k [3] and next door to them a lady of about 90 was finally taken into a home and her well-proportioned and attractive 3-bed semi sold for £56k [3].
In 1999 I asked to view a Manor House. This wasn't a large house, just old and built of interesting stone. It was probably just 2 large bedrooms, 2 large living rooms, good bit of garden and an old outbuilding about 30'x15 on 2 storeys. £55k was the asking price [4].
Those are "proper prices" for a roof over your head.
To buy these properties at the peak 10 years later would have cost:
[1] £130-150k
[2] £150k
[3] £250-260k
[4] £175k it sold for in June 20070 -

Pembury, near Tunbridge Wells. It is an odd little village, house prices never really took off compared to the region and so you can still buy much more house for your money than most of the other villages around. And yet, it's within 55 minutes commute of kings cross, all the major airports, and they are building one of the largest hospitals in kent.

My OH is doing the plumbing in a large detached 3 bed house in a tree lined street in a really good area here. He was amazed when he found out that the property speculator he's doing the job for paid only £175000 for it. TBH he pestered the estate agent for it and the vendors were the children of the old man who owned it. They do not live in the country and just wanted rid of it. He has converted it to four bedrooms which was a fairly simple job and has had the work carried out by tradesmen who are desperate enough to work for low prices. The work has been completed in a couple of months and its soon going on the market for about £350000-£375000. Judging by the area, it has a good chance of fetching close to that.
People with money are still making money even in these harsh times.The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0
