How do you interpret this wording from the Monarch website? (in particular the bit that I've highlighted in red)

"hold baggage
  • Each adult or child receives a free hold baggage allowance up to the amount stated on their ticket.
  • This is normally 20kg including the 5kg hand baggage allowance.
  • Premium Cabin customers are entitled to 30kg of hold baggage.
hand baggage
  • One item of hand baggage per person.
  • Maximum weight of hand baggage must not exceed 5kg per person.
  • Total dimensions of hand baggage must not exceed 56cm x 45cm x 25cm.
If you are unsure as to your baggage allowance please check your ticket or travel itinerary"

My ticket says 20kg. I have not had my hand baggage weighed before - do you think this suggests that they now intend to do that and that the overall total is 15+5=20kg  I'd be grateful for you views

The 20Kg printed on your ticket is the allowance you have each for the hold luggage.

The 5Kg hand luggage allowance is in addition to this, and is pretty much the standard for charter flights. I have had mine weighed before, other times not. But they do have the right to at check-in....

bagand96, I have always understood that to be the case (no pun intended;)) ..its just the use of the word "including" that is making me unsure.

On our return from holiday last year with Excel we were charged 70 euros excess baggage  so I'm anxious to avoid a repeat!! (The luggage allowance with with Excel last year was 15kg hold and 5kg cabin - it was just before they went bust so I think they were being very strict)

I also find the wording a bit ambiguous. Our tickets also say 20kg.

Hadn't spotted that wording, a bit ambiguous yes. I'd always take the allowance on your ticket to be the hold allowance. Is there any information with your ticket that clarifies it?

If not, the only people that can answer this definitively are Monarch Airlines, contact details on their website....

Just to update ......... it was 20kg hold luggage and 5kg cabin baggage. They didn't weigh the cabin baggage - we just had to show them the bags so that they could check that the size was ok.
