Strawberry Runners

amani - I've also been able to create new plants from my strawberry runners by snipping them off and planting them in pots of moist compost. Often they will root of their own accord, even if severed from the parent plant. However, to give them the best chance do this in the cool of the morning or evening and tuck the plants away in a shady place for a week or so to protect them from extra stress and often you'll find this method works.0

amani, I put a bamboo cane through the hanging basked then tied a few clear plastic cups full of compost to the cane and put the runners in the cups, held down with cocktail sticks bent in half to make sure conact with the compost is kept.
Clear plastic helps you to know when the roots are established.

Try a small clear plastic bag full of soil attached to the runner with a rubber band. You should then easily see a root system. This also has the advantage of weighing less than a small pot.
I have no idea if this will work because I`ve just thought of it, but in principle it should.Freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2 = 4 (George Orwell, 1984).

can i gate crash and ask a question, roughly what percentage take? we have lots nd lots of plants maybe 60 and most of them are putting out more than one runner some even putting out 3 or 4 runners was thinking of potting them up all then taking to car boot when established and using profits towards new shed for allotment
They will all take, but I tend to advise only keeping two runners per plant, because that way they bulk up quicker.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

How do I know when strawberries are ready to pick? I have a small bunch growing and one of them is red.0

When they are red, they are ripe. If you are in any doubt next time you go to the supermarket have a look at the strawberries... they should look the same (although the size might vary). They should be firm to the touch, if they are squishy, they are overripe. Pick and eat same day.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

Excellent, I will pick it then! It does look like a ripe strawberry but know with some other fruit/veg you have to leave them for a while. Thanks!0
