A course lasting half a day if you are lucky in my experience although if they are also selling PPI then they have to be licensed by FSA - well bank staff have to anyway.

OP - I had the same situation - we were given 'incentives' to sell store cards, but you had to hit a target before the incentive kicked in (sell 10 and we'll give you £3 per card you've sold).

I hated it. It wasn't in my contract, and having been persuaded to take out expensive credit as a student, I knew how easy it was to fall into that trap. I didn't want to help others to get into debt.

I'd suggest you a) check your employment contract. What does it say are your duties? Does it mention store cards directly, or even indirectly - is there a catch all "other duties as your manager sees fit"?
If not, I'd suggest you approach the store manager/regional manager and ask for a formal meeting. Take a friend/family member for support - tell them you want to have another person present, I'm fairly sure they have to agree.

Outline your concerns, and explain that you do the most you are willing to do, and you don't expect to be penalised for events outside your control (ie. customers saying no!), and that if this treatment continues, you are considering seeking legal advice.

Unless they are seriously hard nosed, I think you'd find they might lighten up a bit!

I totally agree with you - you shouldn't be made to do things you feel are morally wrong. And it's not as if in the present climate you can just 'get another job'...

Best of luck, hope it gets better for you.

My daughter works for a large retail company and her managers get £50 bonus for every store card taken out. She constantly complains that she is pressurised into getting customers to take out the cards.

I think it is unfair and unethical

If the card is benefiting the customer by offering a discount and an interest free period, then I cannot see it as unfair or unethical as long as all the details are disclosed as part of the sale.

I was once offered such a card whilst out shopping, I immediately took up the offer and saved 20% on a new suit, and didn't have to pay for it straight away. When the Store Card bill arrived I settled it in full (I was prepared to pay for the suit in full on the day) and cut the card up.

The sales assistance saved me in the order of £50. Happy Days
