When I worked in retail the only fun bit was seeing who could sell the worst stuff to idiots. I did leave that and went into double glazing afterwards. I will probably go to hell.

Its high pressure, i dont think the "shelf filler" stigma applies anymore.

My new employment are sneaky when putting pressure on staff they adopt a "one for all and all for one approach" but actually what they're saying is that if you dont pull your weight then your mates and co-workers have to help.

Doesnt sound sinnister but its practically applying peer-pressure to get you work faster/better. I dont blame the managers though because they're under the same if not more pressure than us.

Someone mentioned earlier that working in sales it is to be expected.

But I would view some of these jobs as customer services i.e. working on a till. There is nothing worse imo than shopping at M&S for a few small food bits and being asked at the checkout if you would like a credit card.

If you were working in a shop that had potentially high value transactions then I would consider it a possibility. But surely not for low value, fast transactions.

Good luck to op. I do hope people are politly refusing rather than having a go at you.
    Now proud Mumto3 :j

Most staff rooms have league tables in them showing store card sales, christmas stamp sales, scan rates and any other targets they can think off. Oh,and they want you to sell the normal stuff as well.

Being asked if you want a crdit card or store card is par for the course these days. Whenever i go out if it isnt ppl trying to sell me satellite TV or mobile phone contracts its something else.

I also used to work for a well known shop that does payday loans and we had a script we had to go through with the customer, it was part of the training to ask them if they'd like other products but quite frankly it is hard to sell these loan products cos you know ppl will get into debt. bottom line is thpugh it is their decision whether or not to buy.

I appreciate that retail staff are "encouraged" to offer store cards, and I'm not complaining that they do so, but it does make me chuckle when I make a very small purchase and am invited to take out a card.
After politely declining to open a store card to purchase my £1.40 lightbulb, I was then told I could save 10% on my first purchase - if I was going to open a storecard in order to get the 10% discount, I would want to do so when i stood to save more than 14 pence!

Aren't there regulations concerning the sale of financial products which require you to have fairly extensive training before being allowed to sell them?

Or are store cards exempt from them?
