I apologise for publicising the fact that a quality oil that meets manufacturers specs is being sold at half normal price. I thought this was a money saving site

Cheers for the tip. There are some on here who could find something to whinge about if you bought the oil for them, then changed it as well.
Don't let them put you off.

For an older car..say pre-1990 [remember..they did have cars last century]....then the cheapest is by far the best, and most sensible option.

Like tyres, there really is a lot of boogeration regarding oils.

If the quality of the oil was of vital importance to me, I would only use products by Silkolene.

When they sell a synthetic oil, it is a true synthetic oil.

but the quality isn't important to me now...so I use the cheapest I can get that meets the standards required.

My oil changes are roughly every 3000 miles....I run an '88 Volvo 740....and that's when the maker says to change the oil and filter.

if I can get 5 ltires for around 7 or 8 quid, I buy it.....Asda has been good in this respect.

I get filters from the tinternet [a volvo supplier] for around 2 quids.....

Halfords, who trade on an apparent reputation...flog similar stuff at twice the price, oil and filters.....unless they have an offer on.......

It goes in brown or green, comes out black...never fails.

what drips off the filter underseals the chassis.

mind..the gearbox oil for my skoda rapid costs 15 quid per american quart....so I can't really talk there.....it uses 3 quarts!
    smells funny too!

oils acquired additives and higher prices because car makers needed it to last an awful lot longer than volvo expected it to do in 1988!

they needed much longer service intervals, because they were trying to educate customers into not wanting to bother what went on under the bonnet.

    same thing with spark plugs.

I use NGK without exception.......but nowt fancy..just change them regularly [once very 5 years ok??]

The volvo's done 100k miles with me..never mind the previous owner [I'm the third].....it has a bit of piston slap on a cold day, on startup...and the other day, I discovered it's spent the last 5 years with only half a bolt holding the alternator on!

last week we changed the injection throttle bypass gizmo.......5 years ago, my pet garage told me it needed changing..so they did it last week....100k miles later!

Now it idles like it did the week before.
[they also found the hubcap centres they lost 3 years ago]

    the car? I love it!

    scrappage?

They'd have to give me two new cars for the volvo!!!
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

    QUOTE]

All Halfords oils are produced by Esso (or were when I looked into it), and yes are good value, but only when on bogof;)
