We notice it if water is left in a glass overnight then in the morning it tastes like antiseptic.

We are Southern water though. I wondered if it was chlorine or something?

It might be worth ringing Severn Trent and reporting this? The operations people might have an answer to your question?

Call the operation number direct on 0800 783 4444

Although I am not sure there is any work going on in your area that should effect your water.
Has it always been like this or is it a new thing ? Have you had any new pipe work or taps etc
Does it only happen downstairs or is it upstairs too ?

by all means contact your water company. but there is a couple of simple tests to carry out.
    1. does the water taste of tcp when straight from the tap. if so have you changed any of your hoses on your sink/washing machine in the last few months as cheap rubber flexi pipes like the ones sold at some of the major diy chains can make the water taste like tcp.(check for wras approval)
    2. does the water only taste of tcp when boiled. if so boil some water in a pan rather than the kettle and see if there is a difference as it could be simple as the kettle may need replacing as the rubber seal inside the elemnet may be breaking down.

if this doesnt solve the issue then conatct your water company.

agree with previous two posts - OH says that major cause of tcp taste in water is breakdown of rubber washer in tap or internal stop tap - another cause could be back syphoning from washing mashine dishwasher - if after you eliminate these you still have probs ask water company to come test water - OK?
BTW OH used to be customer service inspector with WW is now leakage inspector
