Scrapping a 9 yo car ..

Hi All .:j

Does anyone know of any dealers/manufacturers that participate in the government scrappage scheme for a 9 yo car?

Best deal I know off is the MICRA 1.2 visia 3dr at £5995 after scrappage..Can anyone better that?

Also is it wise to look at pre-reg/ nearly new cars ? Any good sites/dealers offering good deals or 0% APR finance deals?

Any advise/info will be much appreciated :T

I think that currently Nissan are the only company who also accept cars that are 8 or 9 years old aswell. Only against their British built models mind, such as the Micra, Qashqai and Note in this case.

The value of your 9 year old car should (possibly) rise slightly with reduced supply of older models. Get an idea of it's value and deals(exc. scrappage) before you go down the scrappage route.

Part-Exchange value is under £1K so scrappage discount of £2K looks quite attractive even though most of the benefit will go towards the interests on the APR finance.

There must be other choices rather than just NISSAN ?

Citreon are doing good part ex's at the moment where they will give you upto £1000 on top of the part ex price of your car. This is for vehicles that dont qualify under the scrappage rules

Its a Nissan Primera (MOT/TAXED) which im still using but with minor faults and MPG is bad so im thinking of a eco-city car

Well if you can get close to £1k for it with a bit of luck you should be able to negotiate £1k reduction without scrappage (might take a bit of work) on a new car if you want. But there might be some good deeals on pre-reg cars that might even make things cheaper. Think this might take you a bit of leg work.

Hi Bobby ..Citroen own scrappage offers only apply to its higher spec/executive range which dont help my course of hunting down a budget eco city car...thanks anyway

No car manufacturer can actually offer the 'Government Scrappage Scheme' on cars under 10 years old. What some are doing is seizing the opportunity to capture those customers whose interest has been aroused by the scheme but who own cars that are not quite old enough.

Under the governement scheme, £1000 is contributed by the gov't and matched by the manufacturer and/or dealer to give an allowance of £2000. If your car is under 10 years old, the manufacturer/dealer is stumping up the entire £2000.

A 9 year old Micra is not an exciting proposition to a main dealer - they'll have to pay to transport it to auction and pay the auction fees and end up with a few quid back if they're lucky. That's good news for you as if they're offering £2000 to 'scrap' it, they may well be just as keen to offer you £2000 or very close to it to NOT part exchange your car. You could then sell it privately and win both ways.

The important thing to focus on is not what you get for your car but how much it'll cost you to change it for a new one. The biggest hidden cost in any car is its depreciation so try to go for a car that will hold its value well. The £2000 you get off at the front end is bound to affect the value of the car in future.

Unfortunately I don't. I suspect though it will be harder to bargain on those cars that are proving popular under the scrappage scheme but I would hope anything slightly bigger might whet the dealers appetite to do a deal. But since you drive a micra I am assuming you will be looking for similar so that will put you in the band of cars eveyone is trying to buy just now.

Probably best to start searching some of the online brokers like drivethedeal and deal drivers
