changing broadband?

i'm getting sick of Orange now, been with them even before they were Orange (freeserve, wanadoo) and now they're getting worse.
my speed has dropped below 1mb at night for the last 9/10 days, and as a online gamer (ps3 and 360) it's giving me really bad lag, countless disconnections and no doubt giving out really high latency. it's getting virtually impossible to play online!
Before that speed drop, I want to stress that I was having no trouble with them, bar the odd disconnections here and there. But it's slowly getting worse!
After discussion with Orange, they hadn't found any issues so they sent a BT Openreach engineer out checking my line on Monday, he found nothing wrong with the line and after checks, says I should be getting at the very least 7.3mb from a potential 8mb as I'm only 200m away from the exchange and apparently, you wouldn't get a better connection than mine's in my village!
You could argue that Orange are giving me a product that, at night time, isn't fit for it's purpose.
I want to change from Orange but I've never done it before. Orange are just going downhill fast, in my opinion.
As a gamer, I need low pings and a stable connection, day or night. However, I'm a bit limited on my choices - I can't get more than 8mb, can't get fibre-optic broadband etc because i live in a rural area.
Any advice on the best broadband for gamers - low pings, stable connection? How does MAC codes work exactly and would I still be connected to Orange while I move to a new provider?
I'm probably about a year into a 12 month contract (probably rolling) but given that I've been with Orange for years anyway, am I right in thinking I could probably leave at anytime?

What are the LLU options on your exchange? If you're on a current 12m contract , you can leave anytime you like, but if you haven't completed the 12m then you'll have to pay a termination fee to pay up the contract. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

according to samknows broadband, we don't have llu. we only have adsl that's 2mb minimum and 8mb is the maximum.
my exchange is poor for choice. it really bugs me actually.0 -

Well that's the speed that most LLU ISP's will offer you. However they would probably be cheaper. All LLU suppliers still provide the service via ADSL.
What speeds are you looking for?No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
the same speed of 8mb, that is consistent at night as well and as a gamer, i obviously would want low pings and low latency giving me a smoother online gaming experience.
i definitely don't want to be tied into longer than 12 month contract as problems do and can occur.0
