I've recently been refused a couple of cards but have been avoiding the 'various MBNA providers' cards as I assumed they wouldn't touch me as I currently hold an MBNA card.

From these comments I'm reading I'll try another of the MBNA provider cards - as they say nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Other thing is, if anyone can provide any guidance, is that I have recently moved home so on any new applications I am saying '6 months' at latest residence (14 years at previous residence) As well as this I've got about 8K of debt thru BTing. Is the '6 months' residence the reason I'm being refused?

I'm no expert but is the 8k a recent debt? If it is then perhaps that fact coupled with your recent address change could have something to do with it.

The electoral role is extremely important, if you're not on it with regard to your current address you should make a point of registering now. I believe you can do it anytime online?

Recent applications/refusals will have resulted in searches being listed on your credit reference files. Too many searches in a short period is also bad news.

As I said there are wiser people than me on these boards who may well have other advice for you, but IMO it might be better to wait a few short months and try again then?

    Good luck anyway.

    Thanks for that Aliasojo,

good point re the electoral role - hadn't considered that! Seems crazy hearing all the stories of unemployed/low means people having money cards thrown at them and then someone having no bad credit history and good salary being refused for moving house!!

Re the other point, the 8k of debt was run up 6 months ago, when joining the BT party!! But surely all people joining the Balance Transfer process would run into the same problem?

PS - anyone know the website for updating the electoral role??

    Cheers

    Try here?

As for the 8k, 6 months is usually the average recommended time to wait between applications/refusals. Maybe they figure you have enough debt on your plate at the moment?

I do think the electoral role may have more to do with it though.

    Aliasojo,

again thanks for your advice. Have logged onto the electoral role site and updated details.

If it was the fact that I've applied for a number of cards and, as you advise, I should wait 6 months before applying for another set then how do people get subsequent cards for transferring balances coming to the end of the free period? Presume it's a matter of timing?

More than likely. I don't think it has to be 6 months to the day though.

In the case of 6 months interest free for example, if myself and other half have actual debt still owing (rather than a balance owing which can be covered by savings that have been in a high interest account), we both have a Capital One card each with free cheques so we tend to write a cheque for the amount that's remaining when the 6 month deal comes to an end, so that the balance is transferred and then we apply for another 0% card and transfer the Cap 1 balance to the new card. That way, it's always a full 6 months between credit searches/applications and so far we haven't been turned down (yet).

As long as our application goes through before the payment is due to Cap 1(which it has up till now, then we still don't pay any interest.

I'm sure others on here have different systems and ways of doing things though.

i thought my credit rating would be as good as it gets ;D

  • Possibly too much available credit and too many credit searches in a short space of time?
