Well for all those of you who are wondering which company gives out cards the easiest.....the winner without doubt is MBNA.

My 21 year old mentally disabled son was with my ex-husband in Glasgow airport when he was stopped by a canvasser and offered a credit card. My son couldn't answer the questions asked (and it would have been obvious from the moment he opened his mouth that he had serious problems) but that did not deter the canvasser, who then got my son's father to answer the questions instead. My ex stupidly complied (no prizes for intelligence here) as he reckoned nothing would come of it.

Low and behold, a credit card arrives in the post this morning. Granted, the credit limit is only £500 but given the facts:

Mentally disabled person unable to supply information.
No income other than DLA (which ex doesn't actually know about so therefore could not have supplied details of).
No previous credit in any form.
Most basic bank account held in own name AND Mother's.

Surely it's amazing a card was sent out at all? If, just for arguements sake, my son had got the post before me and found this card, it's feasibly possible that he could have used it to the limit, with no understanding of the consequences.

MBNA's answer was: not to worry, just send the card back. Well I am worried, but more about their policy than anything else!

yeh, mbna are a great company...so far 15 months 0% and a free acurist watch for no outlay is pretty good.

I had 2 cards but wanted the watch...so i applied expecting to be turned down but they rang and asked if I wanted to cancel the other 2 cards before i received the new one....certainly did. ;D

  • Well they just refused me >:(

Guess it's time to sit on hands for six months again then :(
  • They refused me too, in June >:(. Therefore, I'm going to wait until Christmas and try again :). I am hoping to be a super-tart then ;D.
I want to be a good saver, but I find it difficult to control my temptation to spend :o .

    I owe £1,247 more than I have in savings :( .
    .
  • Six months seems to be about right. We got refused for a couple before christmas last year, made no applications for six months, and then managed to get more 0% cards between us (hubby and me that is).

Are you saying that even though MBNA have refused me it is still worth trying Virgin?

I have been refused by MBNA twice, first when applying direct and then when trying to get an Abbey card (not sure if it is Abbey or MBNA who actually make the decision). I have never had problems getting credit previously.

Most annoyed about the Abbey decision as I hold my current account with them (and have done for the last 5 years) and have a large agreed overdraft which I don't use. I have written an exceeding grumpy letter to them saying that if they don't think I'm credit worthy then I will have to close my account with them.

    Still waiting for their reply...

    Hi MM

Absolutely, if MBNA are the decision makers, why would they allow me to transfer £7000 from my MBNA card to two other cards, then accept my Virgin application and give me another £6,500 6 weeks later.

    Nothing ventured, nothing gained! :-*

Yes, I got refused by MBNA's 'abbey' and didn't think for a moment this would have occurred as they used to contact me regularly offering additional cards. When I spoke to the abbey/MBNA staff concerned they weren't budging - so perhaps there is something a little different in the criteria they are using?

BTW, I've got an A&L premier account, and that 'pre-approves' one [I believe] to an MBNA-issued 'Moneyback' credit card. Strangely, A&L also market a 'standard' card, but whereas the 'Moneyback' [0.5% cashback] card offers BTs at 1.9% for 9 months, the 'standard' is 0% for 9 months but is not preapproved, AFAIK (worth trying to get anyway?)

OK, I've applied on line - will try to remember to report back with the outcome.
