why not see if they would be prepared to do it for you at an agreed price? Two things you need to take into consideration are access to the loft and also whether the loft floor is structurally strong enough to support a room. If not then you should see about getting amended when its built as that would presumably cost a fraction of doing it afterwards.

I am considering buying a new build in view of extending into the loft in the near future. The trouble is, I'm on a pretty tight budget. I spoke with the site manager today (where the house is being built), he reckons that the loft can be converted but will probably need a dormer. That sounds very expensive. If I buy this house I will have about 20k to spend on a conversion. Idealy I would like 2 bedrooms and at least 1 shower room. Does anyone know if this is feasible within my budget? Daft question I know. But I cant get any actual quotes because A- I dont own the property and B- The house isn't even built yet.

Our dormer conversion is almost finished. The house is approx 6 metres wide and about 4 metres deep. We have had to have our upstairs ceilings lowered in order to get better head height into the loft - one bedroom loft conversion (including lowering of ceilings) has cost us £25,000. Without the dormer it would have been around £22,500 not much difference and the dormer has made what would have otherwise been a very long narrow bedroom into a fantastic bedroom. We didn't pay the quoted price as we bartered and came to an agreed amount.

Due to the current state of things financially, I'm sure you could get a good deal if you asked.

Hi, I used a company in London which was recommended here on MSE. They drew up the plans and took care of building control themselves so apart from the final decorating, it was all done by them which took out a lot of stress off me. They even let me pay the full balance on credit card so I got cashback on that too!

Whilst I had issues with their management (complete lack of communication!!), their workers were absolutely fantastic. There was no dust or damage to my house during the work which was a real surprise and bonus as I had no disruption at all whilst they did the shell. It was only when my tiler came in to do the bathroom that the house got filthy!

Just tried asking. They will not entertain that at all. Thanks for the advice.;)

speccyget - I would badger them over this again. Attic trusses are not overly expensive compared to standard trusses. If they would do that at the least, then you could do any other work on the cheap as it's just finishing and not structural
  • Loft conversion always provides value addition to your home and forget about noice. I was also confused about this but i realized later on.
  • defintely worth shopping around for loft conversion quotes
  • Hi,

Has anyone recently done a loft conversion in Bristol area?
I don't want to use it as a bedroom? I just want to use it as a spare space. Hence I am looking for something cheap. for e.g. things like a folding stair, a couple of velux etc. ofcourse with proper insulation, heating etc.

Any help, advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Raj

    youtube.com/watch?v=Kd-Ox6TRy-g
could be a bit biast towards the company though!
  • We just did a video on helping people avopid the copwbotys too!

It is slightly biased twoards the company - but the information we give is relevant for whoever you choose.

Just search "Portsmouth Loft Conversions Video" on Google (sorry the site won't allow me to add a link!)
