Supermarket Cashback

Just popped to the supermarket for a few things.. there was no queue at the self service checkout so I went over and scanned my items.

The screen then asked me to pay so I put my card in and was offered cash-back... so I pressed "£40". The machine gave me my card back and printed out my receipt. Without realizing I grabbed my bags and off I went. As I got to the car and realized I didn't have any money so ran back in and told the girl watching the self service... I produced my receipt showing the cash-back. She called on the CCTV to be watched as I waited. I was approached and told that no camera was on the self service checkout at the time so they couldn't do anything. I complained at the lack of security to the manager and pointed out cash points always have cameras, and the cash is visably dispensed.

I know it's my fault I didn't see the money, its dispensed out of sight beneeth the scanner. I plan to give customer care a call to report the incident, no doubt they won't do anything.

I just wondered has this happened to anyone else? I'm so careful with money and £40 is a lot to me. I worked in a bank for 6 yrs so if it can happen to me surely it can happen to anyone, i'm really dissapointed that nothing could have been done and nothing was recorded by staff or by the security cameras :(

At these self serve checouts, there is always an operator so they can help you out if something goes wrong.

I was lucky once, i was at a cash machine and forgot to take the money, but the machine gobbled it up and i managed to claim it back.

I do however sympathise with you, £40 is a lot of money!

Normally you would hear a high pitched beeping noise and a image saying cash as dispense below the scanner lol If that didn't happen then you did not get cashback :(

As usual, have a pop at the staff and the company concerned when really the OP was an idiot.

£40....I treat it as a tax on idiots. Well done to whoever took it after you'd gone.
  • the machines don't beep or anything, my receipt shows £40 gone though... the cash is dispensed out of sight from where you put your cards :|

Not really 'out of sight', merely un-noticeable to those who don't look...?!?!

i'm not suggesting you are one of these people, but it really annoys me when 'noobs' use the self-scanner. They faff about for 5 mins working out what a barcode is, then call the attendant over 5-6 times before finally leaving the shop with a smirk of embarrasment on their face, freeing up the only machine working out of 10 for the rest of us to use.

Good luck with your claim anyway.

Actually, although it was a dumb thing to do, we should really be having a go at the dishonest customer who took the £40, knowing it must have been left by the person before them, rather than reporting it to a member of staff.

There are some very dishonest scum bags in the UK.

I would ask them to take a further look at the CCVT, as they must be able to see who used the check out afterwards? Or see them leaving?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

    Scum bags? :rotfl:

If it was £400 I might report it, but for £40?
