That is quite normal but if you connect the colour of the extension wire connected to terminal 2 to terminal 2 on the master and the colour of the extension wire connected to terminal 5 to terminal 5 on the master, that is all that is required. The wires coming into the master are the line pair from the exchange are these are likely to be orange, green, blue or white.

He's right .... Don't be afraid to try if you have an insulation displacement tool (sometimes wrongly described as a crimping tool) If it doesn't work then pull out the new connections and call someone in.

Just a quick update for anyone that cared, I bought the correct tool from play for £3.95 (inc postage) and managed to do it myself - it wasn't as complicated as it looked, and much better than paying £185 to BT! Scandalous price!!
