*Faulty Kettle*

Hiya, can someone help?

Hubby bought a faulty filter kettle from Argos, and promptly replaced it for another one (same brand, yeah, we're kicking ourselves now!) 3 months on, this one doesn't work either!

Can't find the receipt now and have contacted manufacturers who said to take it back to Argos for another exchange (see above why this is not a good idea)

Any suggestions? Can we get a refund without a receipt, or at least an exchange for a DIFFERENT kettle?

I know that our local Argos won't take anything back without a receipt.

it depends very much on how you approach them, and what mood the person who serves you is in on the day.

firstly, do you have anything at all that proves that the kettle did come from argos, and not woolies for example? obviously a receipt is the most preferable option, but even if you can find the box with a catalogue number on, the picking ticket (little square bit of paper that comes taped to the item), a cheque stub, or credit/debit card statement, it will stand you in good ground. understandably, if argos are going to do anything about it, they would like to know they got the money for it in the first place :) anything you can do to help convince them of this will stand you in good stead.

when you go in, explain that you bought kettle 1 back in X, and it was faulty, so you returned it to the store for a replacement. you've now had replacement kettle 3 months, and this one is also not working.

there are several ways things can go from here. if it is an expensive kettle, there may be a repair facility, and argos may offer to send it off for repair - if you cannot provide proof of purchase you may be charged for the repair, as there is no proof it is under guarantee.

if there is no repair service, this does open your options slightly.

you will probably then be offered a replacement of the same kettle. politely decline this, and explain that this is the second version of the same kettle, which has developed the same fault after only 3 months. then ask if it is at all possible to exchange for another kettle.

if the SA agrees to this, they will have to refund the current kettle in order to sell you the new one. if you CAN provide something in the way of proof of purchase, they should track the price history to ensure they refund the correct price. if you cannot provide proof of purchase, you are completely dependant on the good will of the person who serves you. provided it is not an expensive item (which, being a kettle, isnt likely) they should (In theory) be willing to refund in gift vouchers. however, this will be at the current selling price, regardless of how expensive it may have previously been. you can then use these vouchers towards the cost of a new kettle. of course, if you choose a more expensive kettle, you can put the extra to it.

to make it easier for everyone, i recommend you make a note of the catalogue numbers of the replacements you would be interested in, to help speed things up at customer services.

    THINGS TO BEAR IN MIND

    1) if they do replace the same kettle for you, they will not provide a receipt because you could not give them one to start with. at the very least, make sure you keep the picking ticket safe, and if possible, the box.

    2) if they are willing to exchange, dont loose your new receipt. easier said than done i know, but having proof of purchase does give you so much more bargaining power. besides which, we see so many people who shout about their rights, when they cannot provide proof of purchase, that we tend to look much more kindly on those who can

Thanks for that! Will give it a go.

The stub thing is still on the box! Only thing we have in way of proof is debit card statement, but you said this is good, so we'll be bringing that too!

Will let you know how I get on.

That should be more than fine :)

And as a side note Argos don't repair any kettles, toasters or irons.

somewhere along the lines i have definately sent a kettle off because it was a nightmare to wrap - we'd run out of bubble wrap :rotfl: although im damned if i can remember why it was sent off

agree about the irons and toasters though :D

did you know that another proof of purchase is if someone was with you when you bought it. If you take that person along and they said that they saw you buy it then that is proof by law.

if you go and buy a pallet of ex catalogue stuff from surplus dealers you will find hundreds of these kettles. I bought one pallet and it had 20 dead kettles on it.

Thats what happens when companies bow to pressure from customers wanting cheap goods, they supply shoddy merchandise but at the end of the day whether it be £7.99 or £79.99 they all have a 12 month warranty.
