Yes, but they don't spend all of those five years on 'valuation of residential homes', do they? How much of the syllabus is assigned to this topic - anyone know?
If a trainee surveyor chose residential valuation as their "specialist subject", then the majority of the final two years would be, and a fair amount of the first three would be as well.

The reason why I asked this question is because we are intending to buy a property that doesn't need a mortgage ...
We thought it more important, with this particular property, that we get a structural engineer to do an inspection, but of course structural engineers dont give valuations, and in the meantime family and friends have said that we should get a valuation via a chartered surveyor and not rely on the one from the EA being accurate ... So just wondering now what to do.Some days I wake up Grumpy ... Other days I let him lie in.0 -

A chartered surveyor depending on his brief will give you an in depth report on the state of the house.
A couple of years ago offered and agreed price on what appeared a well reburbished property built around 1880. Price seemed fair in relation to local values etc. Surveyor valued at £29k lower than our offer. List of faults was extensive to say the least. Most I wouldn't have even of considered never having bought a house of that period before.
Fortunately we didn't pay the surveyors fee in the end. After I had a run in with the Halifax on how they had arrived at the property valuation.
If in doubt its worth the money.0 -
