Compensation for non-EU flight cancellation?

I recently had a flight cancelled for commercial reasons. The airline did not make any excuse, technical or otherwise - they admitted it was cancelled for commercial reasons - and I was wondering if I'm entitled to compensation.
The difficulty is, this was a long-haul flight into the EU with a non-EU carrier (Gulf Air), and as such the EU regulations on compensation do NOT apply. If anyone could tell me where I can find out whether I'm entitled to anything under some non-EU regulations, I'd be very grateful! I've searched pretty hard but only the EU regulations seem to come up.
Details are as follows:
- The flight was with Gulf Air, from Bangkok to London Heathrow with a stopover at Bahrain.
- My flight from Bangkok to Bahrain was cancelled for commercial reasons. I was only informed of this by email less than 48 hours in advance, and did not read the email in time - I only found out at the airport.
- The only replacement flight offered to me was another Gulf Air flight, departing 9h55m after my scheduled flight. I arrived in the UK over 9 hours late as a result.
- The airline did provide me with accomodation, food and an overseas phone call while I was waiting - as they should - but offered no compensation.
Let me know if you have any links to relevant information. I've tried looking on the Gulf Air website (among other places), but they only mention the EU regulations under their flight cancellation section. I am currently pursuing compensation via email, but I want to be sure of my entitlements (if I have any in this situation) so I'm not easily fobbed off.
