What is the shortest time to buy and register a car?

Hi all
I am in the market for a new motor and hoping to squeeze some salesmen at the end of this quarter.

In terms of bluffing it out in negotiations, if they have deals that are conditional on registration occurring before the end of the month, how far in advance does the sale have to be agreed? Can it be agreed and registered same-day on the last day of the month, with payment and delivery to follow later, or does sale need to be agreed a week before, payment raised, cleared, registration follows, etc?

Thanks!

From when I bought this at this time the car had to be off the premises by the end of quarter. The longest delay was waiting for a certificate of insurance which took 3 days.
  • Tbh the whole sales thing is a bit of a myth,Dealers will want to sell you the car the same amount at any time in this climate.

    +1

Plus the dealer may have already met his quota.
  • it isn't a 'myth' this quarter..like many in the past year...some mfrs are using 1st July for another price rise...so if you have not yourself organised by Mon the 29th June you will have missed the boat. Tues 30th will be a busy day for dealers for other reasons (i.e. it is financial qtr-end so they'll be under pressure from accounting staff to produce reporting in addition to manaing new pricelists which become effective on Weds 1st July) so some may not be able to process orders on that day.
Those mfrs who are using 1st July for their price rises are doing so with some significant increases i.e. volume brands goung up by some £600-£900 in many cases. Factory orders, on most of the brands affected (but not all), placed by 29th avoid the rises..so order the car you really want rather than trying to beat the clock on a compromise-car in stock.
Our dealers have given until midday Mon 29th June to process factory orders as a latest deadline. Anything after that is not guaranteed to be done in time.
If trying to a deal on the spot for a car a dealer has physically in stock, your insurance needs to be arranged for taxation and the dealer needs time to book the car into the workshop for pdi, plating, valet etc.

It's easier nowadays to use the free 7 day insurance that many dealerships offer.

You can buy, insure, tax and drive away all on the same day. I bought a car from a Nissan dealer and they threw in a Norwich Union 7 day insurance cover which meant it coul dbe insured straightaway and then gave me a breathing space to find a good deal.
  • The quickest we ever did was in a couple of hours from the person coming into driving away.

Done it many times on a quarter or month end where customer comes in in the morning and comes back at 7pm to drive away.

All depends on the determination of the salesman/dealership to meet their targets.

If your going this route, be prepared. Make sure you have the funds ready to go. If your taking finance take with you full driving license utility bills and a bank statment. Plus all the crap for your part ex. Obviously you will need to buy a car that is in stock.

However finding the dealership/salesman that desperately needs 1 or two more to meet their target that day well that's another story. If they are much more than that away then they will have written that month/quarter off and will be sandbagging for the next one.

Thanks to all for your opinions, some interesting insights there!

Of the marque i have chosen, I have contacted two separate dealers today and yesterday, via the official testdrive request webpage, and no one has yet contacted me. It seems that they do not want my business ... Yes of course I can phone up but I'd rather deal with a less apathetic dealership!
  • Yeah internet enquires should be something they are hot in this day and age but most haven't got a clue. You might email quite a few before you get a satisfactory response time.

You would definitely get a much better response phoning, obviously its your prerogative.

Just wondering ... am I likely to cut a better deal at the end of this month (end of a quarter) or at the end of next month (immediately prior to new reg in August).
