That's just quick post trying to be helpful and speeding up the boot, turn the laptop on and start pressing F2, if that doesn't work try Del and F1 I can't remember what the button is to get in on a Sony VAIO I think it's F2 but it'll be one of them I expect might be F3 just press it a few times just after you turn it on0

Well, it means you have no Windows operating system on your computer. I think it knows the HDD's there otherwise it would say boot disk failure. I'm just going to ask this anyway, was there an operating system on the computer?0 -
Not a bad thought at all, I was going with it was all working prior to the CMOS problem.
I have seen that error message happen when SATA/IDE modes have been changed so it can happen but good idea0 -
I have just bought the laptop to try and fix as a cheap replacement and small laptop to take away travelling with me. I am unsure on the history of the laptop/system etc.. sorry

Yeah it's been formatted. Um, well you can either get a copy of the OS that's registered to the machine (so if you've got an XP Professional COA on the underneath of the machine then you can use an XP Pro CD to re-install the operating system.
If it's got no COA sticker on it, then you can either use a free Linux OS suck as Ubuntu or you can test Windows 7 on it then use Ubuntu when the RC of Win 7 run's out.0 -
As its got no CD drive how will i do this? USB stick? or will i have to do an external CD drive? (as i dont have this)No Unapproved or Personal links in signatures please - FT30

you'll need to buy an external optical drive, get a laptop sized one so that it wont need an external power source to work you're looking at about £500

For ubuntu, you can fairly easily do a usb stick install.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

It would I think depend on it's age as to what OS you can install on it.I have just bought the laptop to try and fix as a cheap replacement and small laptop to take away travelling with me. I am unsure on the history of the laptop/system etc.. sorry

I've done the same with all my laptops.... Got to be careful what you buy though, some faults can cost more than it's value to fix.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
