I would; however that is only because I of the specialist job I do anyway (only a handful of UK companies do the same as us, plus I'm working from home) and the fact that we have savings to cover such an eventuality.

  • BA would do better to take a permanently take a slice from the pay packets of its highest earners than try to encourage its lowest paid staff to lose a months wages.
A company with public shares has plenty of ways to make cuts before going to its basic level staff.

I would figure that a Company asking its staff to work for free is about to go bust anyway, so no I wouldn't do a day's work for free never mind a month.

I cant afford to do so so its kind of a moot point but

I wouldnt for my current employers

I probably would have (if i had been able to afford to) for my previous employers

    Ditto.

I've only been at my current job for about 6 weeks, so no.

But at my previous job where i'd been for 4+ years, then yes, i'd consider it.

My husaband works for a large IT company and puts in countless hours of unpaid overtime to make sure things runs smoothly in his department. They recently announced they were taking on some new staff which he'll be responsibly for and they will be paid the same as him. He asked for a raise and was turned down ....

I'm guessing he'd tell them to go to hell before he'd work for free ...

They are also very prone to offshoring people at the drop of hat so they have no consideration for their staff and as such shouldn't expect any in return.

No, I wouldn't, because I couldn't afford to. It's all very well someone on upwards of £60k a month to say they can live without an income for a month but for your average wage earner, it's not really an option. I couldn't really even afford to take the £200 a month pay cut that BA are suggesting for their staff - that's a big chunk of my earnings. I don't really like these 'gestures' made by bosses - the extent to which they'll be affected by less pay for a while is tiny, when you compare it to the effect that a similar move would have on someone on an 'average' wage.

Also, just thinking about my own job, whilst I like where I work, they're very penny-wise and pound-foolish and I think there are lots of ways that costs could be significantly reduced without making staff work for free. I'd imagine it's the same in most other places too.

Maybe, just maybe I would if it was a job that I was doing because of ideological reasons, but even then I'd still need to be able to live. On a similar, but different note, that's something that winds me up about all of these 'graduate' jobs that come via unpaid internships. That's great if you're rich enough to support yourself, but horribly unfair if you can't. I also think this whole thing sets a dangerous precedent. People shouldn't be expected to work for free.
  • i voted yes BUT........Only if my job was there for the future otherwise it's a big no no
it's alright for a certain airline to give up his £61,000 a month salary but for the rest well? could you struggle by on £61,000 !!

I work for the NHS, so if it got to that stage I would be very worried indeed!!!!!!!!!!!

But I love my job so much I probably would work for nothing.
