Do you mean you want to set up a UK bank account for your child that they can use while travelling in Australia, or will they be resident in Australia?

Most of the high street banks do accounts for 13yo with solo cards which can be used in shops and ATM's while abroad, if that's what you're after. It might be easier to choose the bank you're with in order to make transferring money into the account quick and easy.

I was told I couldnt use my debit card in shops abroad only at ATM. Thats with HSBC so doubt they would allow solo to be used

The old HSBC Solo cards can be used in ATMs as Cirrus and in shops as Maestro.
The new Visa debit cards will be accepted wherever Visa is taken.

my son has a bank account with Barclays which has a visa card for direct payment, he has had this for the past year since he was 11.

It has been great for him and simple to with an appointment at the local branch.

  • thanks for you message, my daughter has a visa electron card account but unfortunately it's not accepted in Australia. I'm looking to open another account in her name to allow her to use an ATM when she's on holiday. She's going with friends of the family and an account in her name is required as I'm not travelling with her.

    According to Wikipedia:
In some countries, like Australia, retailers are required to accept the card as part of VISA's Accept All Cards Policy, which also applies to the normal Visa Debit card, although the card is not available locally.
There isn't a reference for this, so may be worth double checking with Visa/the bank.

My sons have both got HSBC solo cards and have used them successfully abroad, admittedly not in Australia though.

Many banks are moving away from electron now, so it's worth popping in to a few braches and asking what they issue with the young persons account.
