I have done 1080 miles since the second hand engine was put.It seems to be running fine except when the air con is on the idling changes.Guys can you help how do I find the age of an engine.I found these numbers on a plate near the distributor 988F-12257 AB R8 NSA.I am thinking of ascertaining the age of the engine that was put and the value of such and then to get the value of a 2003 engine.I suspect he might have put a 1999 engine as there is 99 written on the block with white chalk.I then intend to hold him liable for the difference together with other costs I incurred and for the general inconvenience.0

Idle should speed up when the aircon is put on normally on most cars.0

What actually happens is the air con puts a heavy load on the engine, thats why it increases fuel consumption, the engine momontarily slows but the ecu increases fuelling to bring the revs back to normal.
OP I could tell you if it was vauxhall but not ford. It's not uncommon for it to be stamped on the end flange where the engine mates to the gearbox. I know ford will tell you exactly what car it went into originally but they do charge. A quick query on one of the ford owners forums should find someone to decipher the engine No for you
Just came across this, but as said they do charge;

We'll agree to disagree then. When you switch on the air con, the ecu increases the idle speed over normal.0 -

Not supposed to, does the same when you put the headlights on, press the brake etc etc. Any increase in electrical load requires more fuel, (to maintain revs), not more revs. Lets have a vote;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
