Good advice, if you don't want the bill paid.0 -
Guys I am ever so thankful for your help.It was encouraging to hear your views on the matter and just to know that I was not all by myself.I am however greatly inconvenienced because the car was taken in for the repair and I was left with no means of transport and had to use Public transport. The mechanic said he will call me but by the end of day there was no call and I don't expect him to have had finished it then so I was geared to use the tube for my journey.I was 20 minutes late to my night shift.0

You can claim damages and inconvenience.0

It's not the fact that the spark plug broke and bits fell into the engine thats the issue. It's the barmy advice they gave about it getting better on it's own. I find that incredible for any worthwhile garage:eek:
They should have removed the cylinder head and cleared the debris, not a massive job unlike removing the piston and replacing that. The garage took a gamble and lost.
Couple of points, it's highly unlikely that the engine bore in that particular cylinder will have escaped damage. They may try to massage out any scoring and just replace piston rings:mad:
Only an examination of the open engine by an independant will determine this.
Also plugs do become seized/cracked in use, and it's not neccessarily negligent for one to break up like this. Had they done the correct thing and called you when this happened, I think you would have been liable for the head off job to rectify the initial problem. Just something to set at the side of any compensation issues:T
Main thing is make sure the repair is done fully;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
I went to the Garage this morning and they told me that they were now going to replace the whole engine.I am however greatly inconvenienced as I am left without a car whilst this job is being done and again now that he is going to put another engine I don't know how good that engine would be.What can I do to so that I am not short changed?Does changing an engine have any legal implications like issues of mileage etc?0

Mileage will stay the same, but will he be swapping the engine for a new one or another second hand one?0 -
I collected the car today at 1730hrs after a second hand engine had been put in.He told me that he put a good engine which had 65000 miles on it compared to mine which had 79000miles on it.He however could not tell me how old the engine is.He also said that he personally chose it because of the nature of the problem I had so that it won't give me any problems because it was not an easy job to change the engine and would not fancy changing it again.I told him that I would have the car checked by Ford.I however don't know how I would recover all the money that I have spent and I don't know whether the Citizens Advice Bureau would be able to help to recover some money from this Garage.0

Simply write to the garage hold them liable for all costs, giving them 14 days to pay. If not legal proceedings will be taken against them.0

This sounds like a nightmare.
First thing is,for him to tell you it would fix itself is rubbish. If he knew that a plug had broken up and bits had fallen in,it was shear folly to start the engine. It may well have been possible to have the bits retrieved via the plug hole using an endoscope and a small grabber. Falling that, cylinder head off, clean up,replace.
I would have been tempted to have it sorted at another garage or main dealer and recover the costs.
What has he done with YOUR engine? kept it to recover some of his costs? Not good.0
