£1.47 for ... one tin of tomatoes

Either there's been another disastrous tomato harvest or I've stumbled in to that one store which Somerfield uses for its future false half-price offers. £1.47 for a standard tin of Napolina chopped tomatoes!

IMHO there's absolutely no reason to spend more than 38p on a tin of tomatoes. Anything more and you are invariably paying for the name and the money required for that product to be recognised as a 'name'...

I think it is 2 for £1 in Asda. Single cans are 49p in Tesco. And 3 for £2 in Sainsbury's. (According to 'mysupermarket').
  • insane. the cheapy ones are 33p in morrisons - i think they're a bit more watery than the expensive ones but they seem to work fine.

I agree, not really noticeable in a chili or a pasta dish at all. Cheap and cheerful works for me :)

Tomatoes shot up but seem to have settled into the 33-34 price range now. Only a couple of weeks ago I saw some tv cook going on about how it was possible to cook good meals cheaply (which of course we all on here know it is!) but he was saying that tinned tomatoes only cost around 9p. I wondered where he'd been for the last year or so - obviously never does the shopping!

I actually find Morrisons tomatoes at 33p one of the best ones, the juice seems nice and thick, not watery like some others. They're my favourites!

  • Gotta be honest Napolina are the best but nearly £1 per tin, I only buy them when they are half price which is still expensive imo.
£1.47 is an untter ripp off, why is it these and beans have increased so much over the last few years.

What if you live on a small island, get to the mainland once in a blue moon, and the only shop sells them at that price ?
I think some people forget that not everyone has several shops to choose from. Thankfully we have Lidl and Tesco here, but not everyone on the smaller islands can get over to our mainland as often as they'd like, and stockpiling is only viable if you have access to a car and the money to be able to stockpile!
