I think some people forget that not everyone has several shops to choose from. Thankfully we have Lidl and Tesco here, but not everyone on the smaller islands can get over to our mainland as often as they'd like, and stockpiling is only viable if you have access to a car and the money to be able to stockpile!

LOL. Am I expected to put this disclaimer in front of all my posts?

No, it is just so common on here to see people assuming that we all have the vast choice of shops available to us. You did say you could see no reason not to get cheap ones, and so I thought I'd point out a common one. Believe it or not this problem is not just restricted to islands, but also other rural areas, or perhaps even people with ill health (who may not be able to make an online order let alone get to the shops).
Might make some people appreciate the choice they do have.
Of course I choose to live here and am not complaining (especially, as a I said, we have Tesco and Lidl and also am able to get down to Glasgow/Perth etc every so often!), just pointing it out!.
Sometimes high prices are not because anyone is trying to rip anyone off but because it is harder for small shops to keep prices down in the first instance, and of course some supermarkets may exploit their monopoly in certain areas.

If you find that the cheapest brand is watery, add a tablespoon of tomato puree to make it a bit thicker. Tomato ketchup could also be used in an emergency...

My mum swears that adding a little sugar to any recipe with a lot of tinned tomatoes will help to thicken it up, but I've not tried this.

I've noticed tinned beans have gone up a lot too, I may finally get round to cooking and freezing my own soon.

For those with a Lidl nearby, their chopped toms are 33p and much nicer/thicker than supermarket value brands.

(Though I'm still working through the huge pile of Prince's ones I stockpiled a few months ago when Netto had them at 4 for £1 :D)

There's been a huge increase from about 19p per tin last year.

And they'll be chucking tons of them at each other come August in Spain.

I don't know if there is 'crop' issues, but I have noticed that a lot of the cheap tinned items have become really expensive.
It doesn't seem that long ago that own brand tomatoes, sweetcorn, beans and spagetti etc were less than 20p, if not less than 10p a tin. Now you have to hunt to get them for less than 50p.
Soup is another one. A tin of Heinz soup is about 82p everywhere just now - but a few months ago it was a cheap and filling snack, about 3, 4 or even 5 tins for £1 when on offer.

Does anyone know if there is problems with fruit and veg prices/harvests, or is it just the companies having to drastically increase prices to stay in business ?

The past couple of weeks my local Tesco has had the Napolina 4 packs on offer (both whole and chopped) at half price for £1.94 but also buy 1 get 2 free :T

Yes thats 12 tins for £1.94 - to be honest there was no extra point of sale just a little s.e.l - worth checking in case this is available elsewhere.

This was a Belfast store, will check if its still on this evening.

Here are the Napolina tomato deals according to mysupermarket.com (the big picture relates to Tesco (smaller text has other stores). Surpsingly both Asda own and Napolina are 2 for £1 in Asda, still more expensive than 'Smart Price' though! Tesco has own brand on 2 for £1, or Napolina at 49p each.

Further to my last post, the three for the price of one offer is still on but the half price (£1.94) has finished - its now £3.89 for the four pack so that means 12 tins for under four quid.

I asked why the price had went up and she said "cause the single tins are now half price at 49p meaning 12 tins for £6.
