how to quickly and cheaply hide a brick wall

If the brickwork is sound, you can plant a plant like ivy, but it will over time eat its way through the brickwork, so to minimise potential damage, grow something that needs vines, etc to climb up, such as a clematis or honeysuckle. You could paint it as a contrast and then attach criss-crossed vine wires for the plant to climb up.
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

There are lots of fast climbers eg Russian Vine (aka mile a minute vine) but in my experience they tend to go along the top of the wall mainly leaving a space at the bottom! Perhaps a mixture of climbers like that and Boston ivy and clematis montana with some shrubs like eunonymus at the bottom which also have an upwards habit? would make a nice mixture.0

No it wont take over at all. Mine have been in for 4 years and look amazing now but after only 2 years they were pretty good.0

Slim4summer if you search this forum you will find posts by people asking how to remove Russian Vine and Ivy.
I suggest (after having struggled to remove Ivy which I was told had been there for a good 10 years) that you don't put any vigorous climbers on the wall if you intend to live in the house more than 5 years but instead you do as angeladavis suggests.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -

We moved into this house last year and in the garden the ivy was climbing up all the trees, and just totally covered the borders. The garden was well kept before the owner became too ill to look after it, so it was just a matter of months for it to overrun the place. My husband removed 40 black bags of ivy. It was a nightmare.0 -
i planted russian vine in my garden to cover an ugly metal fence and i love it! it is extremely fast grow and DOES need to be kept in check.
I had it now for approx 10 years.
You will hear horror stories about it coz it basically will grow anywhere and everywhere! so i cant state enough that you will need to keep a close eye on it.......0
