    2. The 6:30 Air France flight from Manchester to Charles De Gaule, 1.5 hour stopover, Air France direct to Washington Dulles. Returning direct from JFK with Delta - £375 on Opodo.

What time does the inbound from JFK land? If it's early enough you could still go into work for the day. Having done it, it is hellish, but still do-able.

Thanks, I know, and whoever quoted you 'non-stop' to Salt Lake City has their knickers in a real twist.

Non-stop is non-stop. No change of planes, no re-fuelling stops.
Direct is direct, but with possible stops. Direct never involves changing planes.

    An example.

BA London - Bangkok - direct and non-stop
BA London - Sydney - direct as same plane all the way, but as they have a re-fuelling stop in Bangkok, it's not non-stop.
Virgin - London - Salt Lake City, involving a change of plane, and a change of airline - neither direct or non-stop.

For the purposes of correctness, no.

Non-stop flights can include a stop between origin and destination AND a change of planes depending on the airline. If the flight number is the same for each sector, it is classed as non-stop.

Direct is direct with no stops/layovers, refueling or change of planes.

Yes it is counter-intuitive, but it is correct.

Sorry Old Motters but you've got these the wrong way round.

    Moonchild's explaination is spot on.

One thing I wanted to check; if I decide to book the flight from Manchester to Washington with a 90 minute stopover in Paris, what's the situation with luggage will it be automatically transferred from one flight to the other? I would assume it is as 90 minutes isn't long to collect it and re-check it, but I thought I'd best make sure beforehand.

It will be in Paris yes. If your connection is in the US then you have to collect your bags, go through immigration / customs, drop your bags off again and then proceed to your connecting flight

I finally decided to book the flight via. Paris, but my sister persuaded me first to take a look at flying from Leeds/Bradford instead as it is our local airport. I had previously looked but the flights I'd seen had a duration of 14 hours plus, so I never looked again. However, I looked tonight and found one that was a good price and had a reasonable flight time, so I went to book it and I got the "sorry this flight is no longer available" message. I thought that maybe my session had timed out so I entered all my details again, and this time the flight came up £70 more expensive.

So by this time I was beginning to think that I must be jinxed, as I seemed to keep missing out on prices I thought were good offers. So I started looking at the option of flying to London spending the night there, and getting a flight out of Heathrow, but that worked out too much as well.

So just when I was ready give in, I went back on to Continentals website and the price of the Sunday flight that I had originally looked at had come back down to £352. So then I thought if this flight has come back down, have the Air Canada flight prices come down as well? and sure enough they had so to summarise, I ended up with :

    Open Jaw Ticket :
Sunday 20/09/09 - Manchester to Washington DC International with a 3h stopover at Newark - £352 (which is the exact same price even if you only fly to New York, so I basically got the DC leg for nothing).

    Multi-stop Ticket :
24/09/09 - DC International non stop to Toronto Pearson
29/09/09 - Toronto Pearson to La Guardia
    £145 total price.

So I'm very pleased now with what I've got, thanks to everyone for your help and suggestions :T
