BT Line Rental/Different ISP

Hello all,

I have recently moved into a new house and am trying to arrange internet connection.

I called BT to find out if the was already a line installed and there is and I would be able to get connected within 3 days however when I called back to sort this out I found that I would have to tie in to a 12 month contract for calls aswell and so would have to pay the remaining line rental for the whole 12 months to cancel and change to another provider.

I thought that it would be a simple case of paying the BT line rental and then having another provider for broadband, calls etc on top of that.

Am I being naive or can I actually do that without having the BT calls contract?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Nick

You can choose which calls package you want but you can't have internet through adsl if you don't pay line rental

or try post office telephone they don't have a 12 month contract

All BT lines come with a calling plan, if you go for the minimum (free weekend calls) then I think there is only 1 month notice to move
your calls ( 12 months rolling contract if its evenings & weekends or anytime plans), but the line rental may have a 12 month term,
You can use any broadband supplier you like, provided they offer service in the exchange you are connected to, some providers will only
want you as a customer if you take all services from them, BT have to allow other ISP's to connect to BT retail customers lines.
If you want services like BT answer 1571 and caller display for free then you will have to make the required amount of calls via BT to keep those services free, worth bearing in mind if your 'calls' provider doesnt allow '1280' access back to BT to make those calls,
BT are far from being the most expensive calls provider, in fact a lot of people suggest BT and using indirect access numbers as the cheapest way of making calls
If you want to use another service provider ,lots of people (on here) have a 'dont touch BT with a barge pole' attitude, then call that SP and get them to install or takeover the line that exists, you dont have to use BT, although lots of SP's are only interested in moving
'working ' BT customers to their company, nothing else
