My girlfriend has just had telewest broadband installed. she has a black motorola modem connecvted to her PC by a usb lead.
I want to be able to connect me laptop to the broadband to use the connection, she does not have a router etc. Only 1 pc/laptop needs access at one time.
The modem has 2 connection options RJ45 or USB. whaich would be better to connect to my laptop?
Onec connected how do i manually set the connection up on my laptop? i dont want to use the CD that came with it as it install loads of rubbish.
Can anyone help?

I have blueyonder but a motarola modem, this also has 2 options to connect.Unfortunatley you can't connect 2 pc at he same time. You can only connect one using either conecction. So you are just as well setting up using usb on both and swapping plugs over when you need to use either pc,from memmory you will have to set up both pc's to get ip address setup.
Easier to get a wireless router, since I added a router I have very few times when the broadband links fails. If you do loose connectivity just reboot the router.Be ALERT - The world needs more LERTS0 -
i might not have explained properly only i will only be using my laptop, so should i connect by USB or RJ45? then how do i set the connection up on my laptop?Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0

You can have your partners PC on BY using the usb connection, then you can unplup her usb connction and then plug in the ethernet connction on your PC with no
install disc needed.
You cant both connect at the same time however.
If ethernet just plug one end into the modem and the other end into your PC
no install disc is needed, ethernet cat5 cable is better as its more stable than USB.0 -
so if i just up plug the usb lead from her pc, then plug my laptop to the modem with the ethernet cable. will the connection just work then on my laptop or do you need to configure anything?Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0

Thats it just unplug the USB cable from the modem and her PC, then plug in the ethernet cable to the modem then to your PC and that should work, you must unplug her connection first.
I would turn off the modem for about 15seconds before plugging your end in
but I dont think thats a must do... Just pull out the power lead for 15seconds then
plug in the power lead then connect both ends of the ethernet cable0 -
thanks for that i will give it a try tonight! sorry to keep asking the question but no connection will need setting up on my laptop with a username & password etc and it wont mess her access up on the pc when i am done?Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0

Its a constant connection so no pword or username needed.
Put it this way I did a factory restore a while back and just plugged
in the ethernet cable with no install disk and since then I posed the question
on the BY users forum and they all agreed thats fine to do, you will
get access no problem the only thing to do is to set up an existing
email account manually (and thats a piece of cake).
So go for it, heres the BY users forum if you get any probs.

no you dont need to put any username or password to connect your laptop as it is a constant connecttion. your laptop will pick up the connection when plugged it. you might need to plug your laptop in and pull the power lead out the modem and put back in. this will update you laptop to pick up the ip address from the modem. i know i have to if i plug my laptop into my GF modem. she is also on TW0

If you're going to do this more than once or twice you would be best off getting a wireless router. You would plug the PC into it by wire and have wireless access from the laptop. Much less hassle - you'd be looking at £60 for a good Netgear router and about £22 for the card for the laptop - you can pay more for newer but if all you want to do is surf the net and will never "network" you could also buy older 802.11b (the new ones are "g" or even now "n") for much less.
does this mean we cant swap the connections between computers then? i dont want to mess up her access as i am only going to use it once a week.Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0
