Options
my mums wachine machine[ built in dryer about 5 years old?] stopped washing with hot water about 3 weeks ago... all that comes out is cold water thus the clothes arent washing :( she has 2 kids at home so hand washing clothes on top of a full time job is not convienant.
neighboughs are helping out but its a bit embarressing , she cannot afford to call out a plumber so any help is MUCH apprechiated!!!

a friend of a friend said to check the pumps so we did and they wernt blocked [ they said to take tham off and run water through to check , then check were the pipe fits for any blockage but no :(

anyone that knows any plumbers or someone that knows about washing machine could ask them would be amazing!!!

thank you for any replies xx

hope this is on the right board if not please move mod x

An easy short term solution is to put the clothes in, put soap in the drawer as normal and use a watering can to pour warm water into the soap drawer where the soap is. I would fill it until the water was just short of the door seal.

Longer term, if it is a hot fill, chances are that the thermostat has failed (or the electronics for the thermostat). The thermostat would select hot or cold fill and also control the heater to top up the heat if necessary. If it is cold fill, it could be the thermostat or the heater.

The make and model of the machine would be useful to narrow it down a bit (try google).

I'm guessing the machine has hot and cold water inlets?

Sounds to me the hot water inlet might be blocked up with limescale, or something. Turn the hot and cold water off (in case of accidents) and unscrew the hot water from the washing machine, but leaving it in at the tap. Now put the end of the hose in a bucket, and slowly turn on the tap - if water comes out, then check the filter on the machine, where the hose screws onto. Obviously clean off any muck.

It could also be a solenoid. I'm not sure how to diagnose this, but I suppose you could take the top of the machine off and identify the hot water's route, and listen to see if the solenoid buzzes at all - if so, loudly, or quiet?

It might well be just blocked water jets in the drawer. Make sure these are well de-gunged - I find a long washing-up brush helps! If you're feeling brave, try opening the top of the machine and disecting the top of the drawer where you'll find the water jets. Get rid of any muck here.

First of all does the washing machine have two water supply pipes attached one for hot water and one for cold or just one pipe feeding it with cold water?

if its cold water fill only, i would suspect the heating element at first.

It could be expensive you need to get a quote but washer dryers are the spawn of the devil and I don't think that I would ever buy one again.

Could well be the heating element or thermostat then.

  • The same happened with our washing machine, and it was the heating element I think, IIRC. It was going to work out around £130, so it was more economical to replace the machine.
