HSBC Debit Card Mystery

I have a HSBC Plus account. I phoned HSBC and asked for a Cheque Guarantee Card. They posted me one. I activated and all was great. I withdrew cash, it was fine, however when I went into any store/shop, it said 'Incorrect Pin' anytime I used a chip and pin. Works fine at any cash point or online though.
Phoned HSBC, they said there must be a problem with the chip in the card, so they sent a new card out. Got the new card, it works in cash machines, but not in any chip and pin device. Still paying incorrect number.
Went into HSBC Branch today, the guy 'Unlocked' my PIN on the cash machine, as well as changed my PIN number. I tried withdrawing cash after this, it was all fine, tried in a shop, still incorrect pin.
Staff in the branch had no idea what was wrong and just said 'we'll order you a new PIN, but as your pin is working now, I'm not sure if it's going to make any difference'.
Phoned HSBC Plus helpline, they said they have never come across this problem before and have no idea what to suggest, apart from waiting for the new pin and trying again.
Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

Where are you keeping the card? Is it ever near magnetic forces?
This can play havoc with the magnetic strip which contains the information stored in your card.
Thats all I can think of, sorry.0 -

I'd suggest the same or possibly a fault of the machine in the shop. Have you tried in more than one shop?0 -

It sounds as if the card is faulty - i'd suggest getting them to order you a replacement.I have a HSBC Plus account. I phoned HSBC and asked for a Cheque Guarantee Card. They posted me one. Seems a bit strange that two cards do the same and not work.0

Try the new card in a completely different shop. It is unlikely, but one shop's terminal may be messing with the chip on your card.0
